David Sirota email describes possible Moveon actions against Lieberman.

Just received this in my email. I've been wondering when
progressive activists will send a message to DLC/corporate whores
that only so much selling out will be tolerated before the grassroots
takes action. I'm very excited about this announcement!

Moveon Considers Backing Primary Against Lieberman

The Hartford Courant reports today on how Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT)
continues to self-servingly pursue an image of Bush administration
apologist on the Iraq War. For years, Lieberman has stabbed his party
in the back on high-profile issues - but now, finally, Lieberman may
have overreached, and might feel some consequences.

The Courtant specifically notes that Moveon.org now openly says it
will consider supporting a primary challenge to Lieberman:

" Matzzie, whose organization claims more than 50,000
Connecticut members, said Wednesday that if his members ask, his
group would back a Democratic challenger to Lieberman. Matzzie was in
New Haven last month, and found 'the No. 1 question people asked me
was, `What are we going to do about Joe Lieberman?''"

This is terrific news, as it shows the political infrastructure
outside the Democratic Party apparatus is getting comfortable using
both carrots AND sticks to pressure elected officials to take stands
on issues. This is the way the right has been so successful - by
rewarding their champions, and punishing those who undermine their
movement.

No doubt, elected Democrats will scream and whine about Moveon's
aggressive posture, as they have previously screamed and whined
anytime anyone points out the party's flaccid behavior on other
issues. But then, political movements don't exist to make politicians
happy - they exist to actually achieve substantive policy changes.
That's what Moveon is all about - and both Democrats and Republicans
should be on notice that their positions have political consequences.

2. My Two Cents... Lieberman Has Lost A Few Marbles Or Something!
I've seen he's been more and more DLC/DLC-LITE, but his statements of late have me wondering if he doesn't really want to be a REPUKE!!

If he's not totally STUPID, he must KNOW that MOST Democrats don't agree with him!!! Gee, it must have been WONDERFUL to have your name mentioned by The Idiot 'Eh Joe?????

I KNOW I don't!!!

Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 09:26 PM by Canuckistanian
If we see him showing up at a Republican National Convention, we'll know for sure.

But he's sure presenting his bona fides to the Republican leadership right now.

It's getting a little late for a credible primary challenge to materialize here.

Joe has worn out his welcome and he's made himself a burden to the party. Just like Zell Miller did.

10. he seems pretty "welcome" to the voters in Connecticut
I love the categorical declarations that Joe could be beaten in a primary. As recently as July he was still getting a 67 percent approval rate in statewide polls, even though chimpy got a 59 percent disapproval rate at the same time.

A primary challenge to Lieberman is a waste of money ... money that could be put to far better use supporting a Democrat in a race to unseat a incumbent repub (or to fill a repub vacancy).

7. Some have said Lieberman supports Bush's war because of Israel. How
does the mess created in Iraq help Israel? It would seem that the increase in hatred of the US in the entire Middle East would only make things worse of Israel.

8. The Likkudites wanted Saddam removed from power because
Saddam sent like $25,000 to the families of any Palestinian sucide bomber. Don't know if Saddam every paid up.

Lieberman was supportive of the Likkuties.

What the Likkudites and Lieberman forgot was that Iran also wanted Saddam removed and Iran has much more influence with the Shiites than Israel does.

11. a waste of time and money
Joe Lieberman isn't going to lose to a primary challenger in Connecticut. Period. He's got favorable ratings in the high 60 percent range (even as Chimpy is down below 40 percent).

As I said earlier, for Moveon to spend any money on a primary challenge to Lieberman is a huge waste. That money can and should be put to far better use supporting a Democrat with an opportunity to unseat an incumbent republican (like DeWine) or to fill a seat being vacated by a repub vacancy (like Cunningham's seat).

If moveon persists in this, here's one person who won't be giving them any more $$.

19. I disagree. A poll back in July isn't the holy grail. A groundswell of
support for a strong opposition candidate could unseat him--especially after his performance of late with falling support for the Iraq quagmire and his votes with repukes on many other issues. And it would be worth the effort even if it came close to defeating him. It would send a very much needed and powerful message to the other DLC asshats! Hey you corporate brown noses--clean up your act or we're coming after you!

I remember TDS showing Joe skipping into the Senate chamber holding hands with Sen. Lynn Cheney and Joe's attacking freedom on college campuses] ... a Fox News favorite ... the kiss ... enron ... etc.etc.etc.

... getting our party back is essential in getting our country back ... it's time to loosen the corporate grip ... the corporate-funded DLC is undercutting people progress ...

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Joe voted for Reagan and Bu$h.

26. Lead or get out of the way!
P.S. Unless the vote is protected, there is no chance for success.

29. MoveOn's openness is so refreshing!!!
When was the last time you saw a recognized GOP group waging a campaign against a candidate? At least MoveOn's upfront about it!

You won't see the slimy, fly-till-the-election PACs that the GOP props us then supports with stealth funds.
