Anyone watching the DNC Presidential Nomination Commission on C-SPAN?
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 11:18 AM by IndianaGreen
They are discussing the primary scheme in '08 and beyond, including the front loading of primaries, and the impact of Iowa and New Hampshire.

This is important stuff!

3. Yes, I think they said there are two today and then their
recommendaitons are forwarded to Chairman Dean. It is quite interesting to hear all the calculating that goes into arranging this kind of stuff.

7. I will support grouping Indiana with other states in a regional scheme
The last time Indiana meant anything was when Bobby Kennedy won it in 1968.

The second blackest day in Indiana political history was in the aftermath of Bobby's death when all of his antiwar delegates were replaced by prowar, pro-Humphrey delegates (including Governor Roger Branigin). The bad taste has never left my mouth!

The blackest day in Indiana political history was when George Wallace got 40-percent of the Democratic primary vote in 1964.

A good day was the day that the 40-percent that Wallace got left the Democratic Party and joined the GOP to vote for Raygun.

13. I am too young to remember
my Indiana political memory begins with Dan Quayle ousting Birch Bayh... but how in the world did Indiana have two dem (and fairly liberal, I believe) Senators in the seventies?

15. Busing and abortion!
I believe it was busing and the fear of Blacks that broke the Indiana Democrats. I think this was true also in other states. White Americans were upset about their children being bused to primarily Black schools, white students were frightened about the black students being bused to their schools, realty agents were calling white families to frighten them into selling their homes (Blacks are moving in!), etc. I saw all of this through my child's eyes and I thought everyone was nuts!

Roe v. Wade was the final nail! Many liberal Democrats could not support abortion and go against their Church, so they became Republicans.

6. Loved the statements from Senator Levin and the DNC Hispanic
Chair, that the proposal does not go far enough representing the interest of minority voters. The Hisapnic Chairwoman was adamant that the recent elections in NJ and Virgina were important because they did not take the minority voters for granted and if the GE wanted their votes then show the respect in the primary process.

They need to make it really change and be more diverse! It would also diminish the media's echo chamber!

Levin and the Latina Chair made excellent points, and they are points that we DUers have heatedly debated in the past.

8. Alexis Herman was Clinton's Labor Secretary.

She's black and she's from the deep south and has strong credentials.

Maybe she should be recruited as a congressional candidate, but I suspect that she is more comfortable in party politics than in national politics.

10. OMG, Donna Brazile?
Haven't the dems learned that this woman is incompetent? And that she is Rove's buddy? Get her out of the power center of the party, please.

12. I guess she represents the views of hot air balloons!
She is off now!

I am surprised she endorsed changing the process.

14. Thanks for the heads up.
fwiw, I favor a three tiered primary schedule - with the smallest electoral states going first, followed by the middle electoral tier and concluding with the big five.

16. Will someone explain to me what the votes mean?
They voted down the amendment proposed by the Latina Chair, then they voted for some report.

I need someone to explain what did it all mean, and we cannot get that from listening to all the backslapping.

18. I wouldn't trust anything with the name "Clinton" on it.
It is obvious that the party cannot ignore its Latino constituency, the largest minority group in the country!
