oh my- "Articles of Impeachment" uttered in debate on NBC Today Show
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 07:39 AM by npincus
Wow... Couric moderating, Pat Buchanan vs. Katrina Van de Huval (sp?) editor of The Nation, debating B*sh's right to authorize NSA spying on Americans... at the end of the debate, Buchanan said (something like) "so if he violated the Constitution then impeach him!". To which Van de Huval smapped back, "If the Democrats regain the House they will bring Articles of Impeachment to the floor!"

Not verbatim- according to memory. But, WOW! The 'I-word' bandied about on The Today Show! The notion of impeachment as a consequence of presidential misconduct hitting the MSM- hard! Yippee!

1. Isn't it sad
that if the right thing were to be done, Democrats have to regain the house. Republicans set the bar for impeachment not too many years ago and they are now showing their true colors. If the republican majority in the house does not pursue articles of impeachment it is because they have zero principles, regardless of what their hawkers and base think.

2. They were setting the stage for the rise to one-party rule
Now that they have it, they're not going to give it up easily.

10. Yeah, it's really important
that we pound home that the Republicans are the ones blocking justice. No rule of law for them. No siree.

"If the Democrats regain the House they will bring Articles of Impeachment to the floor!"

If you make only one promise to the American people this year, make it this one.

5. Bingo! It's a tough stand, but it's THE issue for 2006. Moreover
We've got the stage set for a litany of revelations on Republican abuse during the campaign season:

Conyers' promoting investigation into misuse of intelligence, censure and possible impeachment for BOTH Bush and Cheney

The Abramhof Scandal is about to yield up primarily republican politicians

DeLay's trial and the gerrymandering of Texas that violated laws protecting minority voting.

Scooter Libby's trial...

Possibly more from Fitzgerals on Plamegate, including apparantly, an interest in who forged the yellowcake documents.

If the dangers of control of the entire government by one party's ideologues can't be successfully demonstrated to the American peoplem in such a climate, then we might as well break North America into 9 separate nations.

9. She was Tweety's show a few days ago. I've also seen
Amy Goodman on MSNBC.

Nice that at least one station is allowing these truthful media folks on TV.

11. This is very exciting
NBC's Today Show is viewed by MILLIONS... we at DU are political junkies who've yearned for Chimpy's impeachment probably since he stole the 2000 election! But to hear the American staple of MSM consumption, The Today Show, discussing impeachment as a consequence of Chimpy's probable misconduct and violation of the Constitution is... stunning! Because this means the word "impeachment" is going to enter mainstream discourse, and Americans will begin to mull it over, and really start to assess the entire B*sh presidency as a series of mistakes, incompetent choices, lies and misconduct. And ready themselves to set the stage (elect Democrats) to fire this incompetent Chimp via Articles of Impeachment introduced by elected representatives on our behalf.

Call me an optimist. Chimpy's luck has run out.

I love Katrina, too (though I can't spell her name!). She's been a guest on cable news for a while now, but I never saw her guest on regular network TV.

6. Yes, but they still let Pat Buchanan lie
He said that Bush had to bypass the special court, because sometimes there was not enough time to go ask for a warrant. Totally leaving out that you can ask for a warrant retroactively.

My second problem with that segment, was the false choice Katie Couric presented. Either we have security or preserve civil liberties.

Why not have both? Why is it a choice? Are people only safe in dictatorships? Why are these discussions always presented as he said/she said? The whole point of a a free and open society is that personal freedom outweighs the security issue.

And lastly, the whole notion of "National Security" is a smokescreen.

Even though 9-11 was a tragic event, is was not a threat to national security. The government was still functioning, society was not shut down. The US is in no danger of being invaded and overtaken by a foreign power. We can talk about personal security, but there really is no national security issue. Unless people are admitting that the US is so vulnerable, that a group of supposedly less that 100 people can control a country of 280 million people.

7. Happy about Katrina Van Den Huval
I was happy about seeing Katrina Van Den Huval on the Today. I also hope the Democrats put forward articles of impeachment. I really do not think they will lose on this issue. I think people are really beginning to get upset at the level of power Bush wants to have. In addition, I just saw a poll were about 88%-89% of those who answered the poll said they thought Bush should at least be tried for the things he did concerning Iraq and the spying on American citizens.

8. Nice pipe dream. To bad elections are a thing of the past.
remember the funny results from 2002? The exit polls flipped over? They are going to be even funner this time. But you keep strategizing. I'll certainly vote. We shall have all wasted our time.
