Maybe We Should Just Pull Out of Iraq
Its broken and we can't fix it. And that sucker is going to blow wide open no matter what we do.

The Sunnis and the Shia are just going to have to duke it out until one side wins.

4. Jack Murtha tried to tell everyone WE are now the targets
Redeploying would instantly reduce the violence.

Text of Murtha's resolution
Murtha Resolution To Redeploy U.S. Forces from Iraq:
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

November 17, 2005

_____________________

Whereas Congress and the American People have not been shown clear, measurable progress toward establishment of stable and improving security in Iraq or of a stable and improving economy in Iraq, both of which are essential to "promote the emergence of a democratic government";

Whereas additional stabilization in Iraq by U, S. military forces cannot be achieved without the deployment of hundreds of thousands of additional U S. troops, which in turn cannot be achieved without a military draft;

Whereas more than $277 billion has been appropriated by the United States Congress to prosecute U.S. military action in Iraq and Afghanistan;

Whereas, as of the drafting of this resolution, 2,079 U.S. troops have been killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom;

Whereas U.S. forces have become the target of the insurgency,

Whereas, according to recent polls, over 80% of the Iraqi people want U.S. forces out of Iraq;

Whereas polls also indicate that 45% of the Iraqi people feel that the attacks on U.S. forces are justified;

Whereas, due to the foregoing, Congress finds it evident that continuing U.S. military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the United States of America, the people of Iraq, or the Persian Gulf Region, which were cited in Public Law 107-243 as justification for undertaking such action;

Therefore be it

I) Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in

2) Congress assembled,

3) That:

4) Section 1. The deployment of United States forces in Iraq, by direction of Congress, is

5) hereby terminated and the forces involved are to be redeployed at the earliest practicable

6) date.

7) Section 2. A quick-reaction U.S. force and an over-the-horizon presence of U.S Marines

8) shall be deployed in the region.

9) Section 3 The United States of America shall pursue security and stability in Iraq

10) through diplomacy.

The GOP version:

RESOLUTION

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that
the deployment of United States forces in Iraq be terminated immediately.

Resolved, That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that the deployment of United States forces
in Iraq be terminated immediately.

5. Sure seems like we are.
Just what are we going to accomplish over there now?

We can't even get the electricity up and running. Let alone a government.

We should just let them work out their own government. Split up into three states - whatever works.

6. Will the violence stop if the US redeploys?
The Sunni and the Shia suddenly become best friends? Most people here believe a civil war is inevitable. So the question is, can the US prevent it?

Iraq was essentially a Sunni Arab dominated Apartheid state with a fascist government. This model is broken, and it looks like it will take a civil war to settle old scores.

9. The longer we stay, the likelier a civil war is.
Yes, the Sunni did hold most the power under Saddam, but it was really a blended society and Shi'a and Kurds also held positions of power, as well as Christians. Most families have both Sunni and Shi'a members, and the Kurds have always wanted autonomy, not independence.

The sooner we're out of there, the sooner they will get to sitting down and talking to each other again. If insurgents are blowing up Iraqi police, it's because they see the police as being tools of the invaders. If they are assassinating politicians, it's because they believe the politicians only have their position because of acquiencence to the Americans.

If we were invaded I might be taking pot shots at the collaborators myself.

7. Sadly
US has to pull out. Sooner ( less dead and a big save a tons of bucks) or later ( more deads and hmm maybe hit a trillion or more)

Bottomline ME win US lose. Thanks the Chimp. He is a fucking walking disaster. And yes he is a UNITER he will unite the ME into a total anti US zone.

Then Iraq will go to UN and ask for compensation from the US.

It is going to be painful for the US.

8. Ok, how do we do it without a democratic majority somewhere
We're screwed. The war will continue while we're in the minority

10. Our Troops Are Sitting Ducks
When a country that is "stable" (i.e. no civil war) only because of a strong ruthless leader and the leader is removed - watch out. All the long simmering ethnic, tribal, religious differences that had been repressed by force will come boiling to the surface. Am I discussing present day Iraq? No - Yugoslavia. Tito managed to hold the country together, using a combination of the carrot and the stick. After his death, the shit really hit the fan; Cristian vs Muslim, Croat vs Serb, etc. etc. Ethnic cleansing, mass graves. Next door neighbors friendly for 50 years killing each other, etc.

This is what has been happening for the last year in Iraq, starting slowly but now increasing: Shia and Sunni militia who owe their allegiance to their leader, not the central government - mixed neighborhoods chasing out or killing the minority (in some cases Shia, in other cases Sunni), etc.

And our troops, not nearly enough to stabilize the country but enough to be the target as an occupying army. They are just sitting ducks. Dying 1 or 2 or 10 at a time, week after week, month after month. Cindy asked "what is the noble cause that caused my son to die?" There is no noble cause. Maybe we can't get them all home for Christmas, but certainly in time to watch the USC Texas game AT HOME on Jan. 4th.

Bring the Troops Home Now

11. What about the Iraqis?
We broke it and can't fix it alone. I want the troops home and safe ASAP.

But I also don't want to just leave the innocent Iraqi citizens in the hell we've brought to them. We can't say, "Oops, our bad, we made a mistake. Sorry. Bye." We need an international effort NOW to help the Iraqis regain some sort of life back.
