Nevada tanning salon gets 9/11 loan: audit By Jim Wolf
Thu Dec 29, 3:10 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Texas golf course, a Nevada tanning salon and an Illinois candy shop were among small businesses that may have improperly received U.S. subsidized loans intended for firms hurt by the September 11 attacks, an internal government watchdog has found.

The Small Business Administration's inspector general said in a report made public on Wednesday that in 85 percent of the sample of loans it reviewed, a company's eligibility to receive the money through the program could not be verified.

---snip---

The report's examples included the Texas golf course, whose owner was cited by a lender as saying "people were more interested in staying home and watching the attack on television than playing golf." However, the course was owned by someone else when the attacks took place and the justification for the $480,000 in loan guarantees did not apply to the new owner, the report said.

The tanning salon's lender blamed the September 11 attacks for hurting the Las Vegas casino industry which employed many of the salon's customers.

The people above are also nasty little whores feeding off the scraps of dead people. I had friends who died in the Towers on 9/11. AND NEVADA residents need a tan and cowboys need to play golf.

Heckuva job!

1. It would be interesting to know
whether all these businesses knew they were getting 9/11 related low interest rate SBA funds. I suspect that there were more than a few who took whatever funds their bankers advised - meaning, of course, that it was the bankers who feretted out the available funds.

3. Blame Should Rest Primarily With Lenders
They didn't bother to question whether these two examples had been creditably impacted by 9/11? A tanning salon in the midwest??????????

5. It happened in Portland OR
The local news had a story about some guy who applied for an SBA loan, and was as surprised as the local media to find out that the money had come from the same pool as the money earmarked for 9/11.

It's also important to realize that these are loans, and that the government's role is in guaranteeing their repayment. Most of the people taking out these loans have every intention of paying them back, and will pay them back. The folks who might be scamming the system are the sharp operators but moreso the lending agencies who will almost surely greenlight some loans they know are bad risks simply because they will be guaranteed not to lose any money by the federal government -- that's you and me.

4. Witnesseth the lack of government regulation!
Many of these applications were done by the lending banks (reducing their risk) because the bill gave THEM the power to make the determination if it was applicable.

I'm haunted by the memory of the S&L crashes after THAT round of gov't guaranteed banking + deregulation (of course, the government was "strangling" the them!) - then we had to bail them out to the tune of $500 BILLION. Funny figure when we hear the complaints of today's Katrina recovery funding...

6. Similar story on NPR yesterday
most of the businesses receiving the funds had no idea they were 9-11 related. The banks lending the money didnt bother to tell them it was meant for 9-11 relief.

8. Disguisting, Truly Disguisting
As a citizen of new york I find the actions of 9/11 horrific and disguisting. And I don't 100% refer to the plane attacks here -- our own country has piled shit upon shit on the whole thing. Everything from the poor way they prepared relief workers to help to the people who weren't 'allowed' to be given funds because they went through the 9/11 funds with a fine comb to weed out families who needed this money....and now giving it to friggen gulf courses and tanning salons??? My friend, originally a rescue worker and then one of the people who handled phone calls to victims, said there were many times he was informed he wasn't allowed to help certain people due to this or that liability. I mean people here who lost their husband and couldn't financially support themselves, or worse, most of their family. I believe he actually lost his position and he eventually left because he helped people he 'wasn't allowed to help' cause he saw it as BS.

Why isn't this all over the news???
