War should be made a crime....
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 01:07 PM by Nightjock
The 16th soldier from Long Island (where I live) died in Iraq yesterday. His name was Lance Sage and he was the only child of 67 year old Alice Jones. He joined the armed services to "see the world." He was in Iraq for only one month before he died on patrol.

I did not know him personally but my heart breaks for 26 year old Lance, his family, and the 2,175 soldiers and 100,000 Iraqi civilians who have died in george bush's war of choice he "would do again."

Mr.bush, if you are spying on DU today here are some quotes from other people I'd like you to read.

And BTW, GO FUCK YOURSELF YOU LYING PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!
YOU ARE GETTING IMPEACHED NEXT YEAR!!!!!

War should be made a crime, and those who instigate it should be punished as criminals. ~Charles Evans Hughes

Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind. ~John F. Kennedy, 1961

Sometimes I think it should be a rule of war that you have to see somebody up close and get to know him before you can shoot him. ~ Colonel Potter

A great war leaves the country with three armies - an army of cripples, an army of mourners, and an army of thieves. ~German Proverb

What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world. ~Robert E. Lee, letter to his wife, 1864

Draft beer; not people. ~Author Unknown

War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today. ~John F. Kennedy

What this planet needs is more mistletoe and less missile-talk. ~Author Unknown

Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime. ~Ernest Hemingway

You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake. ~Jeanette Rankin

In war, there are no unwounded soldiers. ~José Narosky

In war, truth is the first casualty. ~Aeschylus

We have war when at least one of the parties to a conflict wants something more than it wants peace. ~Jeane J. Kirkpatrick

Liberty and democracy become unholy when their hands are dyed red with innocent blood. ~Gandhi, Non-violence in Peace and War, 1948

All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers. ~François Fénelon

1. Only one problem with Mr. Hughes' quote
Who enforces it? The UN seems the logical answer, but they may very well have to wage a greater war to stop it. If the idea ever garnered enough popular support it would be easy, but given the rah-rah nationalism of the day, I highly doubt it!

2. War is a crime
One other way ro avoid unnecessary wars is to amend the Constitution so that the moment the President declares a war, a mandatory draft goes into effect for everyone under 50 years old.

3. YES.... War IS a crime
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 01:17 PM by C_U_L8R
Wars of aggression ... like Bush committed in Iraq.. are totally illegal
(though he'd argue on some flimsy WMD or Terrah rationale).
Bottom line.. Bush committed (and is committing) crimes against humanity..
and there is a World Court designed to deal with these crimes
(just like Nuremberg).

The problem seems to be getting him there.

4. The sentiment comes from great minds.
The problem remains that not everyone has a great mind. How do we deal with dictatorial regimes? Economic sanctions tend to hurt the local populace not the one in power. Still nice to dream and hope though. What would you do if that trillion dollars a year of military spending were suddenly freed up. Sadly, I believe the bulk of it would end up as tax cuts regardless of the nation.

6. Here's one that will need to be read aloud to * and then explained
very very carefully...

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win. Sun-tzu 4th Century BC
