I just got back from a town hall meeting with a congress critter
and I am PISSED!!!

Rev. Emanuel Cleaver - he is the rep for most of the KCMO area - had a forum to discuss national security and The Patriot Act. It featured two college professors who were 'experts'. One was a reasonable man and the other one was a neocon asshole. The reasonable guy explained FISA, talked about presidential authority; said it is not simply a matter of pres. authority, he must go to congress. He also came right out and said "The president has broken the law. What do we want to do about it?"

The neocon - I don't even know where to start. He incensed the audience so many times. He said this is the most dangerous time ever, he had lived through the Korean and Vietnam Wars and this is much more dangerous than anything in his lifetime, even the Cuban Missile Crisis. The reasonable guy stood up and said he disagreed strongly, that he remembers hiding under his desk for nuclear bomb drills as a child and if the Cuban Missile Crisis had not been settled peacefully, the whole world would have been blown to bits. Then the neocon said that the NY Times was irresponsible in exposing the NSA spying, that Osama got rid of his cell phone when the media exposed that he had one. (I shouted out 'And you believe he didn't get a new cell phone??') He also said The Patriot Act has a slew of changes that affect FISA and it was wrong for the media to not report that. He claimed that FISA was modified on 9/18/01 to allow special powers for the president to use military force to go after al qaeda and that the pres has 15 days to wiretap without a warrant, which gives him time to go to congress to get more changes in FISA.

Then Congressman Cleaver spoke. He read a letter he said he got today from Nancy Pelosi, which I recognized as something that was posted here several weeks ago. He said the justice dept, instead of going to the intelligence committee with concerns after 9/11, went to the leaders of both parties. He said it is common knowledge in D.C. that you only go to party leaders when you are not concerned about confidentiality. And he was shocked that the justice dept under Asscroft was not more discrete. Cleaver said that 2 years after 9/11, Asscroft said they didn't need to expand presidential authority to fight terrorism. He said several times that the commander in chief argument is a delicate one. (I am still trying to figure that one out.) Cleaver also mentioned John Conyers several times and the hearings he held in a basement last week.

Then it was time for questions. First question was about IMPEACHMENT!! Cleaver said the worst thing that can happen is impeachment discussions. He said we need to worry about many many other things, including the balance of power, instead of impeachment. We need to focus on the substance of bush's acts, not impeachment. He said if President Gore had done what bush has done, he would feel worse. The Democrats are fighting with one hand behind behind their backs, but they do have the upper hand. Right now, the Democrats in congress are trying to decide what is our recourse?
He said at least 5 times that the Dems are not in power, they can't even hold hearings. The last time he said that, I shouted out "Conyers DID!" And he said but it was in a basement and no media came, the people don't even know about it. Another audience member yelled "WE knew".

The next few questions were about terrorism and they were answered by the neocon. I know I don't have to repeat his standard RW talking points, we have all heard them a million times. But the thing he said that got the crowd really upset was: "WE DO NOT TORTURE". As soon as he said that, ten people jumped up and literally ran to the mic to ask questions. And the rest of the meeting consisted of audience members who were obviously more well informed than the US congressman on stage asking questions and challenging the neocon asshole, who was visibly angry by the time the meeting ended.

I walked up to talk to Cleaver after it was over. I thanked him for answering my letter about the delay for DeLay and told him he was the only Democratic congressman who did answer; I had written to a couple dozen. He agreed he would much rather be in DC working than giving DeLay time to fight charges that looked like they were going to stick. Then I said to him: "I didn't really have a question so I didn't go to the mic, but I do have a request." He smiled and said "What would that be?" I said "GROW A SPINE!!" I told him that surely he could tell how angry his constituents are, that we supporters who voted for him and his fellow Democrats are sick and tired of the neocons and bush and we are impatiently waiting for someone to have the guts to challenge this administration. I asked him if he had heard that Kerry was willing to filibuster Alito and he said yes, he knew that. I said that is the kind of representation your constituents need. PLEASE fight back. Then I walked away, I didn't even give him time to respond.

And I am still pissed. Politicians - :grr: !!!!!

4. Tell me to stop being pissed.
I need a drink or something. Man, I was ready to scream all through the whole meeting. But I was not alone. The audience was LIVID. The lady in front of me was so pissed. She kept turning around and saying things to me under her breath. When the neocon said something about 9/11, she looked at me and said "MIHOP"!!!

I told her about DU. She had never heard of us. So maybe I accomplished one thing by recruiting a new DUer. LOL

I have admired him for 25 years. He used to do a lot of good things for the kids in the school district and was active as a mentor for many years.

He was totally clueless tonight though. He wanted to present a 'balanced' view, so he had the two experts at the meeting. But that neocon guy - :grr: One guy said to me as we walked out "That guy is lucky we are nonviolent protesters!" LOL

"Well, Judy, we've been talking with people who believe that summary executions of people arrested for jaywalking or littering might be a bit hasty in judicial terms. But here to present the other side of the argument is Dr. Phineas Q. Stumbletitt, Ph.D. who's here representing the American Nepotism Institute. Dr. Stumbletitt?"

30. BTW, what are you doing for the SOTU speech?
The only way we've been able to handle the last four years of Bush bullshit is by getting drunk. So, we figured, why not do it with a bunch of Democrats?

Anyway, next Tuesday, there's a local Dem meeting at the Uptown Theater (I think it's the room on the west side upstairs of the main facility - we went there for John Kerry's acceptance speech). Anyway, if you make a nominal pledge, I'm sure you can take advantage of the cash bar, which I'm certain we'll need to do to get through 85 minutes of simian "oratory".

Here's the URL:

Let me know what's up!

And I do want to go. But I will be in Jeff City that day yelling at Baby Blunt. It's Child Advocacy Day in MO. And right now, Blunt is having more of an impact on me and my work than any of the assholes in DC. Tough choice - which repukelican deserves more of my wrath? :)

If I get back early enough and I am not too tired, I will come to the Uptown.

I will definitely be at Californo's the next day for Drinking Liberally and the DFA meeting.

It is every Wed at Harlings Upstairs at 5:30. But on the first Wed it is at Californo's at 5:30 and then the DFA meeting is at 7:00. Their meetings are good. Much more organized than our meetups. They actually have an agenda!

Next Wed they are having a candidate forum. Last month, they had a lady come and talk about stem cell research.

You should come. Several of your DU buddies are there.

13. There used to be a time when democracy was built around the town hall
No longer. Those days of America are gone. Town hall democracy in the Thirteen Colonies has been replaced by our federal nightmare.

Decision-making power has been taken away. It's now in the hands of people thousands of miles away in D.C., and they are as removed from ordinary Americans as Martians are from Earth. They're cold and calculating. They're methodical and cruel, and they slowly draw plans against us and the rest of the world.

There's some friends I know, and they're not really political, and some of them are moderate Repubs, and they're some of the most embittered anti-Bush folks I know, but I think that's more to do with the fact that they watched what happened to some of their close friends who came home from that damn war in Iraq.

17. Something I've learned about cell phone tracking
Drug dealers and the like use cellular phones almost exclusively. When cellular phones became pay as you go and "throwaway," law enforcement had to find a way to continue to track the folks they were watching even when they switched phones and numbers.

Let's say that Drug Dealer Dan is known to be using cell phone number BR-549. Law enforcement track both the incoming and outgoing calls on that phone. People, even the most careful, tend to pattern. For instance, Dan's is called at roughly 2 and 10 p.m. each day by HA-789 and he talks for 2-3 minutes each time. All the trends and patterns show up in the database -- who calls regularly, what time and for how long. The same with out-going.

While it is true that most switch phones often, it is not true that all do it at once. Law enforcement has learned to watch the trends and follow several cell phones at the same time, thus keeping themselves within the loop of their investigation even when cell phones are tossed or exchanged for others.

If local law enforcement has figured out a way to maintain surveillance in such a technological age, wouldn't you think NSA could do the same with Osama's cell phone?

23. Good point!!
I am a fan of THE WIRE on HBO. They did a whole season of shows on tracking drug dealers via cell phones.

And now that you mention local law enforcement, I remembered another comment an audience member made. She asked why congress was not concerned that local law enforcement was using The Patriot Act to abuse their powers at routine traffic stops.

I'm amazed to read it was a very educated audience, and they didn't get it from DU. That tells me the internet in general is educating the masses and that puts a little kink in the neocons colons and plans.

52. Good for you
:yourock:

There is so much cowardice. Those with brave souls have to encourage everyone else.

If politics come up in a discussion, my blood pressure is raised significantly and I'm ready to rumble. My new talking point is "I'm sick of cowards giving up." Tonight I ripped into a new employee after hours. He'd been a patronizing ass all night and he kept interrupting a friend - who is a vet formerly stationed at Gitmo (who HATES ** LOL!!!!!)- as he was telling us about his troubles getting even a preliminary assessment from a VA doctor until April! He has been home for months....

Anyhoo, this new dunce is pretty much in tune with what's going on, but more in that "well, that's the price we pay to be the best in the world, and we the people have lost anyway...blah blah blah" nihilistic way.

He had asked me whether I thought Dems were any better than Repukes. When I said, "Hell yes" he said "Conversation closed." But screw you, Pal! I began to elaborate - all the reasons poured out. New Orleans, WTC, all the soldiers. That's when he tried his "That's the price we pay to be the superpower."

"Uh, I've been to Amsterdam, and if we're so superior, why do THEY have state-of-the-art levies and we have dirt and concrete levies?" :wtf:

He tried his "we're all doomed, anyway" shit so I turned to the vet and asked (knowing the answer he'd give already) if he thought the majority of the military would fire on American citizens. He said, no, the current sentiment in the military would have them fire on the government before they would fire on their own fellow Americans. I believe the vet.

And I am encouraged by your story, because anyone who thinks most people are all hunky dory with their leaders here in the US of A is an idiot.

Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 09:51 AM by proud2Blib
What are we gonna do about it?

Yesterday when I heard Kerry was willing to filibuster, I mentioned it to a couple co-workers. They said "What's a filibuster?" :banghead:

56. When was this?!
I would have loved to have gone to that. Why the hell did Cleaver think that he had to present a "balanced" view? Is he a Democrat or is he not?

59. Last night
I'm sorry I didn't tell you about it. I read about it in a DFA email and figured you got their emails too.

I had conferences till 7:00 and then went to this thing. Long day. That could maybe explain my nasty mood when I got home. But I am still pissed off today. :grr:

60. I've been working late anyway.
I'm supposed to be able to opt out for family stuff, but there isn't much of that happening.
Still pissed from last night? Can't say that I blame you. Maybe Cleaver could be persuaded to have a staffer lurk DU.

61. Nah I am calmed down
but I am still irritated that I went to hear Cleaver and had to listen to a neocon war monger instead.

63. "You told a US congressman to GET A SPINE?"
A co-worker said that to me today and gave me a high five. :)

My best friend told me that it was a dumb thing to do and I am getting too worked up over politics these days.

I am kinda proud of myself. Hopefully I gave him something to think about.

65. Oh. Hell. Yes.
You did the only thing you could do. I'm not at all surprised that you said what you did, either. Tell the truth and demand it from your government. I'm proud to know you.
:patriot:
And I don't usually use smilies.

70. LOL
My mom got in trouble when she was at national conference of co-workers. Someone suggested that they look into hiring a lobbyist (this was way back in the 1980's) and she said she'd go along with it as long as they got someone with balls. Apparently mom was one of the few women present and the rest of them were shocked (shocked I tell you) that she would talk that way.*

Hell yeah you should be proud of yourself. And I do think you gave him something to talk about.

* I think this explains a lot about me. :eyes:

57. Fabulous. Well done. Now we need several thousand more of us
to go do exactly that kind of thing, all around the country. But perhaps at the mic, not privately.

Ya done good!!

64. You know I did think about going to the mic
But I decided to keep it a private conversation.

Next time, though, I will probably go public.

68. I can *hear* you saying that
Really, I heard your voice in my head. Good for you. I want to do the same thing to Dennis everytime I see him. Way to go girl!

Too bad that neocon didn't squirt a few of the faux GOP tears when he got beat up by the informed electorate he was dealing with.

72. They are going to have to
You know, I don't like Paul Morrison at all. But I will vote for him because he has a spine. That means a lot these days.

I also think he is going to kick double L Phill's ass.
