The U.S. government will wade into the thorny question of Internet freedom in China and the role played by U.S. technology companies such as Google in complying with Chinese government censorship.
The Congressional Human Rights Caucus has invited Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Cisco Systems to a public hearing on “Human Rights and the Internet—The People’s Republic of China” on Wednesday on Capitol Hill.
The same companies have been asked to participate in a session of a House of Representatives subcommittee on Global Human Rights on February 16. The discussions could lead to a law that governs the behavior of U.S. Internet companies aboard.
Human Rights Watch, a watchdog group that has loudly protested China’s curtailment of its citizens’ freedom of expression and freedom from Internet censorship, has also been invited to the meeting.(link has more)
Of course, given new VAGUE laws regarding the internet and first amendment, how long before Google puts limitations on Americans?
