Americans Want Blair to Replace Annan
(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Many adults in the United States believe the current prime minister of Britain would be a perfect fit for the United Nations (UN), according to a poll by Gallup released by CNN and USA Today. 66 per cent of respondents would favour Tony Blair becoming the next UN secretary-general.

Blair—the leader of Britain’s Labour party—has served as prime minister since 1997. In May 2005, British voters renewed the House of Commons. Labour secured 356 seats, followed by the Conservatives with 197 and the Liberal Democrats with 62. 67 per cent of respondents in the U.S. have a favourable opinion of Blair.

1. Many adults in the United States are dumber than a box of rocks.
And why do they make an issue of pointing out that it's 'adults' in the United States? As opposed to what, infants?

6. We do???
Tony Blair does not need to be anywhere near the U.N. leadership circle. He can content himself with speaker's honoraria and positions with neocon think tanks and be done with it. The only Americans who favor him are Bushco ilk and people who only "have heard of" Tony B-liar.

9. Secretary General can be vetoed by the Security Council permanent members
and it would break with all precedent to chose a high profile politician from a permanent Security Council country. France, China and Russia would all need good reasons to change the way things are done, and the next SG will be selected before Chirac ends his French presidential term. Since Chirac and Blair more or less hate each other, I can't see Chirac suddenly giving Blair a huge international role, even if Russia and China could be induced to do so.
