We don't have the numbers - plain and simple. Most of us here follow the issues pretty closely. We dig up news stories. Unfortunately, we are not the norm - and are in the minority. And until we can get more people to agree with us - we will continue to lose on most of the issues.
If you believe the polls - the majority of peole think Alito was just "hunky dory." They don't think that Roe vs. Wade can possibly be overturned. They don't realize that what they'll do is just continue to chip away at it little by little. And if you don't believe the polls - our Representatives believe them and use them as a guide on what their constituents want and on how to vote. Their main concern is to get re-elected.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/01/23/alito/"Only 38 percent of respondents said they think a filibuster by Democratic senators would be justified, and about a third said they believe Alito would vote to overturn the 1973 Supreme Court decision that struck down state laws against abortion."
Right now the right owns the media, the radio waves, the voting machines, the election officals and they've redistricted the states. It's going to take along time to overcome that.
The "blue" states/areas are the areas where people are much better educated - almost all the top Universites are there. Blue staters have access to the best newspapers.
I don't think that people here realize that in the "red" states/areas the few newspapers they have there are owned by right wingers. The few radio stations they get are the right wing talk shows. Almost all of the red states are ranked as being the least educated.
Until we get more people to agree with us, our Representatives and Senators will continually vote the way the majority of their contitiuents want them to vote. Let's face it - their main concern is just to get re-elected AND to get enough money to be able to win again.
Until we realize the REAL problem - we will never fix things. The first step to fixing a problem is to know the REAL problem. THEN you have to work on the solutions.
In my opinion - a big part of the problem is the media, talk radio, the lack of education, etc.
The average person is not paying attention and if they do get any news - it's from Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity on the radio on the way to work. There was an article posted here that stated that even college graduates were incapable of of reading an editorial and processing it.
