President Bush made his strongest-ever pitch for alternative energy Tuesday night,
about a month after the federal government cut the budget of the Golden-based National Renewable Energy Laboratory by $28 million. Although Colorado lawmakers liked Bush’s commitment to renewable energy in his State of the Union speech, an environmental advocacy group and some members of Congress called for more aggressive action.
“We need more than a carefully worded speech,” Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., said in a release about a bipartisan push for alternative energy. “More production of renewable fuels, combined with more development of wind, solar, biomass, and other renewable resources will move the United States closer to energy independence.”
Along with 41 House members and 12 senators, Salazar supports a bill that would call for further development of hybrid technologies, provide tax credits for manufacturers to retool facilities for advanced technology and alternativefuel cars and trucks, and establish fuel-efficiency standards for trucks.
Research into fuel efficiency and other strategies will be slowed at the Golden lab because its budget was slashed by 13 percent this year, prompting the layoff of 30 to 40 of its 900 employees in the next week or two and canceling some subcontractor work. Bob Noun, the lab’s deputy associate director, said the cuts won’t eliminate projects but will delay some by up to a year. The cuts also could affect long-term operations.
