Mormon's pissed at HBO's "Big Love"
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 01:18 PM by flamingyouth
Personally I hang on ever word of the show. It is a look into the life of one big dysfunctional family with 1 husband and 3 wives.

=========================================================

Hatch: ‘Big Love’ is ‘just plain trash’

Mormon members of Congress have little regard for the HBO television show “Big Love” but are reluctant to throw their weight behind church efforts to get it yanked off the air.

The show, which follows the life of a polygamous family living in a Salt Lake City suburb, has triggered an e-mail campaign among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) to cancel the show.

Many of the 16 Mormon members of Congress say they haven’t seen the show, and none say they’re ready to call for its removal — but that’s not to say they’re fans either.

The show is “just plain trash,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), who said he hasn’t seen the show. “The show’s producers insist ‘Big Love’ isn’t about the LDS Church, but they obviously intend for their viewers to make that connection.

3. I could see this coming a mile away, lol
Honestly, the show is being KIND to them. Anyway, it makes a very clear distinction between LDS and the polygamists. Maybe if Utah actually imposed the law, this wouldn't be a tv show, there would be nothing to see.

19. They are being kind. All one has to do is go to exmormon.org
and find that there is plenty of material if HBO really wanted Mormons to look bad.

From what I can understand, Mormons are not allowed to read or view any material considered anti-Mormon so I'm not surprised that Hatch would pass judgment without seeing it.

I wonder if the same people who have railed against US newspapers that wouldn't publish the controversial Muslim cartoons are the same ones writing emails to get this show (and The Book of Daniel) off the air.

So obviously a lot of bitterness but also info on some of the beliefs and practices.

That sounds SO fascinating!!! Part of the reason I'm enjoying Big Love, I'm learning about the practices of a culture I wouldn't be privy to otherwise.

36. Yes. I'm not a Mormon and never was but I had a good friend
who was a Mormon and I went to the Mormon Temple with him in LA. I always wanted to know the deal behind the "garment." I not only found out but saw a picture. (I don't have a weird underwear fetish, really, it's just that my friend told me about it and then said it was a secret and wouldn't tell me anything more so I was curious:-) )

4. It's not a bad show...
and they are correct, it is not about LDS, it is about a branch that has spun off from LDS. It is about a compound (not unlike what has been written about in articles the last couple of years), in which the people live like prairie days. I like it.

7. Jon Krakauer's book...
I hate to keep mentioning it but everyone should read JK's book Under The Banner Of Heaven. Same guy that wrote Into Thin Air and Into The Wild. It gives an overview of Mormon history and pays special attention to the polygamists. Very informative and very scary.

8. My Mormon neighbor is very proud of her polygamous past
Her great grand father had six wives. Four of whom were sisters. As each sister got older, the husband married a younger sister.

My own grandmother was the daughter of a polygamist who had 23 children amongst his wives.

Hatch knows the history of his past but chooses to ignore it. The reason that the Western Mormons vote almost 100% GOP is that they resented the democratic governors saying they must give up polygamy to vote.

9. i love the show too....
i don't understand why people just don't simply turn off their televisions, it's not as if there's only 3 channels like when i was a kid.

i also loved the "book of daniel", but thanks to the religious zealots it got pulled as well. if i don't like a show, (eg. scarborough country, situation room, and anything on fox news channel) i simply don't watch, but i'm not gonna go out of my way to get a tv show yanked just because i don't like the content.

15. Come on
There are plenty of references to the fact that they are not part of the LDS. It is a great show, and does that suprise anyone? HBO has been putting out the best stuff on TV for sometime now becasue they can tackle issues that regualr TV can't. Remember kids, the religious right and organizations like Morality in Media want to also censor HBO and take stuff off like the Sopranos, The Wire and Big Love.

25. You want to get a faithful Mormon all riled up?
Ask him if he knows that Hugh Nibley sexually abused his daughter while reenacting ancient egyptian rites as part of his research into church doctrine and history. Hugh Nibley was an apologist for LDS, and really well-respected. His daughter Martha wrote a book about a year ago in which she accuses her father of abusing her when she was a kid. The guy died right around the time the book was released. Her mother and siblings are saying that an evil therapist gave their daughter false memories. It's a big controversy within the church.

28. Actually, on 'Big Love', they are practicing the version of Mormonism
called for by their Founder and 'Prophet', Joseph Smith; Smith himself had 33 (known) wives.
The Mormon churched decided to officially renounce polygamy in order to have Utah become a State, and admitted to the Union.
Talk about cherry-picking your Dogma...LOL.

32. And I'M pissed that they try to 'cure' GLBT folk with shock therapy.
Yeah, it's been done by the church, look it up. "Porn therapy", too.

And they flew the swastika in their German churches during WWII, while the Jehovah's Witnesses (another nutty cult, IMNSHO) at least defied Hitler, even to the point of death.

This ex-Mormon doesn't give a FUCK what bothers that homophobic, backwards started-by-a-fraud-known-as-such-in-his-own-time cult!

(If there are Mormon DUers here: I apologize for the offense, but I absolutely stand by my comment.)

33. OK the keywords - Porn +Therapy are just not a good thing to put
into GOOGLE. I added "gays" and I did see a site where the Episcopal Church ruled NOT to try and push GLBT to change themselves and I also read about one man who said he was recovering from that aversion therapy. I didn't get to a site where they gave electric shocks while showing gay porn but I am not doubting that it happens.

I used that therapy to stop smoking but that is quite a different thing. since I did not come out of my mother's womb with a cigarette in hand.
