Foley still logging into chat account with screen name linked to scandal

Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) was still using the America Online screen name now associated with attempts to solicit underage boys, RAW STORY has learned.

As recently as 10:50 AM EST today, users of the AOL Instant messaging were surprised to find Foley signed briefly onto the chat service, using the screen name Maf54.

The login was used in now-public emails and instant messages with underage boys.

Foley signed on only briefly this morning, but has reportedly continued to use the screen name occasionally as the scandal surrounding it unfolds publicly.

1. hmmm maybe he owns a computer. . .

Every message service in the computer world logs you in as soon as you turn on your computer, especially if you have always on INTERNET (i.e. DSL). Someone at home boots up the computer then he is logged in.

The fact that the AOL name is active only shows that we need to train our congress people on how to ensure their privacy by NOT running IM programs at start up and their security by making better passwords and not storing them.

3. That's true...

...and while I have several IM clients on my PC that I seldom use, I changed the settings on all of them so that they don't load at startup.

5. Have a question as I never IM. There is a green dot at the top of the

screen names and that dot says 'green' means available (on line.)

Next to maf54 is a red dot. Wouldn't that red mean he was NOT on line?

7. Someone should keep tabs on Maf54 (and get his IP addy)

Do a Direct Connect the next time he logs on and find out where he's logging in from. His IP address would give us a ton of info on where he really is. On Windows/Mac/Linux open up a command line terminal and type "netstat" that'll dump all of your current connections. Since DC is direct to his comp, you'd snag his ip in a heartbeat.
