“IF ONLY” By Nancy Greggs
Well, Republican powers-that-be, the Fat Lady will be singing in just a couple of weeks, and it looks like she won’t be crooning your tune.
God knows you’ve been dealt some terrible blows of late. But if you hadn’t taken every opportunity to place yourselves atop that holier-than-thou pedestal, your fall from grace wouldn’t have been quite so inevitable, not to mention fatal.
Hindsight being 20/20, you’re probably pondering your own mis-steps over the past few years, and realizing where it all went so terribly wrong …
IF ONLY you hadn’t held yourselves out to be good, devout Christians, admitting to torture and asking your countrymen to sanction it wouldn’t be such a noose around your neck now.
IF ONLY you hadn’t belittled Kerry for being a flip-flopper, your president’s last-minute change of position on ‘staying the course’ wouldn’t sound quite so ridiculous.
IF ONLY you hadn’t constantly spouted your rhetoric about the left-wing gay agenda, covering up for Foley wouldn’t have had the impact it did.
IF ONLY you hadn’t continually insisted that it was your opponents who were incompetent, your failures in every aspect of governance wouldn’t be so glaring.
IF ONLY you hadn’t bragged about a six-month foray into Iraq to be greeted as liberators spreading democracy, your once-loyal followers wouldn’t see you now as incompetent, murderous liars.
IF ONLY you hadn’t used your influence to quash real reporting of the news, the media wouldn’t be so anxious to go for your throat every chance they get.
IF ONLY you hadn’t all been so collectively greedy, the exposure of your bribe-taking and shady dealings would have looked more like a ‘few bad apples’ and less like a ‘culture of corruption’.
IF ONLY you hadn’t been so fast to line your own pockets and those of your corporate buddies with the taxpayers’ dollars, those same taxpayers wouldn’t be voting you out of office.
IF ONLY you hadn’t told your constituents that you were the party who would bring honor and dignity back to Washington politics, your lack of both wouldn’t seem so blatantly obvious.
IF ONLY you hadn’t stressed those tax cuts as being the reward for supporting you, your middle-class constituents might not have noticed how small their piece of the pie turned out to be.
IF ONLY you hadn’t held your president out as an intelligent statesman, your faithful followers wouldn’t have been so disillusioned when he acted like a buffoon.
IF ONLY you hadn’t been caught in so many lies, your supporters might still believe what you have to say.
IF ONLY you hadn’t been caught in so many scandals, your traditional voters wouldn’t be so determined to abandon you.
IF ONLY you hadn’t pointed the finger of blame at everyone else for your failures, the citizenry wouldn’t be so anxious to hold you personally to account.
IF ONLY you hadn’t accused the opposition of every sin you were later found to be guilty of, your hypocrisy wouldn’t have brought you down.
IF ONLY you had looked out for the people you were supposed to represent, they wouldn’t be looking the other way as you beg for another chance.
IF ONLY you hadn’t acted like such petty, arrogant asses, you wouldn’t be in for such a profound ass-kicking right now.
If only …
