" I Should Be Supporting Allen. Instead, I'm Leaving the Party."
Uh oh.

I Should Be Supporting Allen. Instead, I'm Leaving the Party.
By Frank Schaeffer
The Dallas Daily News

Wednesday 01 November 2006

I'm a Christian, a writer, a military parent and a registered Republican.
On all those counts, I was disgusted by an e-mail I just received that's being circulated by campaign supporters of Republican George Allen, who's trying to retain his Senate seat in Virginia.

The message goes like this: "First, it was the Catholic priests, then it was Mark Foley, and now Jim Webb, whose sleazy novels discuss sex between very young teenagers.... Hmmm, sounds like a perverted pedophile to me! Pass the word that we do not need any more pedophiles in office."

Democrat James Webb is a war hero and former Marine, wounded in Vietnam and winner of the Navy Cross. He was writing about class and military issues long before me and has articulated the issue of how the elites have dropped the ball on military service in his classic novel Fields of Fire. By the way, that's a book Tom Wolfe calls "the greatest of the Vietnam novels."

And I've been voting Republican for years. My late father - Dr. Francis Schaeffer - was an evangelical theologian, friend to Jerry Falwell and White House guest of Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and the first President Bush. I have nice handwritten letters from various members of the Bush family, including Barbara, thanking me for my books on military service. So I have every reason to stay in the Republicans' good graces. (It's nice to be complimented on television by the First Lady.)
But enough is enough. I've had it with Republican smears.

The Webb e-mail is the embodiment of the cynical Republican strategists, some of whom must know the difference between fiction and nonfiction. Was Agatha Christie a murderer because she wrote about murder?

7. It's impossible to believe.
It takes THIS?

What about killing and murdering Iraqis? What about the lies that took us to war. WAR!

And then on top of it all, they still can't register as Democrats.

I know. It's a big change. But it's as though being a Democrat is worse than any of those things that caused them to divorce the republican party.

I guess I just can't understand their mentality.

9. It is impossible to understand
I guess if the Dems started acting like Republicana and vice-versa, I'd have a hard time changing, too. But I'd do it. I think for some people, changing parties is like changing religions — unthinkable, no matter the logic, and despite all the lies, scandals, and hypocrisy. Remember, too, that most of them get their news solely from Fox & Rush, so they really do live in an alternate universe.

8. I'm from Dallas and I've never heard of the "Dallas Daily News"
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 08:09 PM by cool user name
... not saying there isn't a magazine with that name but ...

I'm suspicious. Dallas has one major newspaper. It's called The Dallas Morning News.

However, if the story is true, kudos to the author.

Edit: Whoops. I stand corrected. The link goes straight to the DMN.

My apologies. Good story. I'm usually a stickler for sources.

10. Holy JimJonesy
That is Francis Schaefer's son writing. Dead Francis is one of the heavy hitters in the Dominionist movement. Frank more or less renounced his father theology years ago but still has status among Christians, especially those not drunk on Christo-fascist kool aid. Here's a review of one of his books.

11. I had figured that the Republicans' pathetic attempts to smear Webb based on
his novels would backfire. This thoroughly confirms it.

12. Don't forget it is anti-Catholic as well....
The south has a deep-rooted streak of anti-Catholic sentiment...

The KKK hated the Papists as much as they hated them Jews and those Colored fellows....
