You know I read today that he was speaking at the Holocaust Denial COnference so I decided to research him. Does anybody know how this racist nutbag actually won an election In Louisiana? Anybody from Louisiana on these boards that can explain how a founder of a KKK organization could win an election?

This guy didnt win in the 50s or 60s but in like 1990. I mean we can assume some people are racist nutbags by their positions, but this guy founded a KKK group. That is a whole new level

Duke made several unsuccessful bids for political office, including runs for the Louisiana House, Louisiana Senate, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, governor of Louisiana and twice for president of the United States. In 2002, he pled guilty to tax evasion and fraud charges, resulting in a year-long prison sentence. He is a long-time New Orleans resident and the father of two.

In December 1988, he switched political affiliation from Democratic to Republican.

In 1989, he ran as a Republican for a seat representing Metairie in the Louisiana State House of Representatives. He defeated fellow Republican John Treen, the brother of David C. Treen, the first Republican to be elected governor of Louisiana since Reconstruction, by a narrow margin of 51-49 percent. Duke's victory came despite visits to the district in support of John Treen's candidacy by President George H.W. Bush, former President Ronald Reagan, and other GOP notables.

5. Simple. Gerrymandering.

I did live in La. (N.O.) at the time. The only election he ever won was for a seat in the La. state House. The House has 101 districts, which naturally tend to be very small. Dukkke's district centered around the exclusive, lily-white suburb of Old Metairie. Even then he just squeaked by in a runoff against a non-racist-nutbag repuke.

I mentioned that the La. House has 101 seats. The layout on the floor is 50 double desks, and one single. Guess who got assigned the single????? :evilgrin:
