Ned Lamont Backs Habeas Corpus -- and Chris Dodd

Ari Melber

Ned Lamont has been laying low since his November loss to Joe Lieberman, Connecticut's Independent junior Senator. Yet now Lamont is stepping up to help Connecticut's senior Senator, Chris Dodd, promote his bill to restore habeas corpus and other rights that were revoked by last year's Military Commissions Act.

Lamont remains a popular figure among the netroots, which catalyzed his primary campaign and made him to the top candidate in netroots donations during the mid-terms. Now he is asking his Internet supporters to back Dodd's ambitious new bill, the "Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007."

"This legislation is a chance for the Senate to start asserting our true American values again by unequivocally rejecting the gravely mistaken Administration policies on detainee treatment - policies which have only made us less safe," Lamont wrote in a recent email to his national supporter list, driving traffic to Dodd's new website, Restore-Habeas.org. The website is part of Dodd's broader Internet campaign, including live-blogging at sites like Booman Tribune and buying ads on top blogs like Daily Kos and MyDD, to promote the legislation and his presidential campaign. As John Nichols recently explained, Dodd is making the Constitution and rule of law "central to his outreach to voters."

Of course, the Dodd Campaign welcomes Lamont's support of the legislation and Dodd's candidacy. Spokesperson Benvea Schulte told The Nation, "We are very pleased Ned Lamont is supporting Chris Dodd for President. He brings great energy and enthusiasm to our campaign effort, and we look forward to his support and that of others around the country as we move forward in our campaign." ....(more at http://www.thenation.com/blogs/campaignmatters?bid=45&pid=169394

3. Good for Senator Dodd!!
Chris Dodd is one of the better candidates in the race for the WH. I don't think he'll get the nomination, but it's great to have his voice in this race. And the endorsement by Ned Lamont is very important for him.

5. For Dodd, the "corpus" is the "Help America Vote For Bush Act" of 2002.
He put these SOBs in the White House. Now he wants to score points with left by dissing their pet projects. Tsk. Tsk. I know what you did, Senator. And I'm going to haunt every thread at DU where you are trying to capitalize on Bush/Cheney's little peccadilloes, as the stealth candidate of the Corporate Reich.

For those who don't know, Christopher Dodd colluded with the biggest crooks in the Anthrax Congress--Tom Delay and Bob Ney--to ram through the $3.9 billion electronic voting boondoggle, by which rightwing Bushite corporations took over our vote counting system with machines run on 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, with virtually no audit/recount controls. And they are...

DIEBOLD: Until recently, headed by Wally O'Dell, a Bush-Cheney campaign chair and major fundraiser (a Bush "Pioneer," right up there with Ken Lay), who promised in writing to "deliver Ohio's electoral votes to Bush-Cheney in 2004"; and

ES&S: A spinoff of Diebold (similar computer architecture), initially funded by rightwing billionaire Howard Ahmanson, who also gave one million dollars to the extremist 'christian' Chalcedon Foundation (which touts the death penalty for homosexuals, among other things). Diebold and ES&S have an incestuous relationship; until recently, they were run by two brothers, Bob and Tod Urosevich.

These are the people who "counted" 80% of the nation's votes in 2004, under a veil of corporate secrecy--thanks in large part to Christopher Dodd. So if you're worried about suspension of habeas corpus, you might ask Dodd about suspension of transparent elections. Because loss of human rights is quite often preceded by stolen elections. It's a fascist pattern. At least with Hillary--and even Bush, for that matter--you can see what they are. Not with Dodd.

9. After the hanging chads, people thought it would be a better system. Hindsight is 20/20.
Dodd's a good progressive by any standard.

11. Bullshit! The "Help America Vote for Bush Act" was a set-up for fraudulent elections
from the beginning. Heavy duty lobbying by Diebold and ES&S to get it passed, and specifically to require no paper trail.

And the Anthrax Congress gave them everything their greedy, fraudulent hearts desired. Billions of dollars. Secret industry "testing" of the machines. No controls on lavish lobbying. A Bush appointed federal "commission" to "oversee" it all. No paper trail. No disclosure requirements whatsoever on the "trade secret" code by which all of our votes would be "counted." It was MADE TO ORDER for stealing the 2004 election--and keeping the Corporate Reich in power forevermore!

10. Maybe I'm missing something...
But I don't see where Ned Lamont explicitly endorsed Dodd's candidacy, altho it sure looks like Dodd's campaign is trying to claim he did.

It makes sense to me that Lamont would back Dodd, for as long as he lasts anyway, since they're from the same state, but I don't see it in any of the quotes.
