DeepModem Mom posted this article about Hagel considering running for President with a DEM as VP.

I would offer that the Strongest Hagel and a DEM ticket would be Hagel/Gore. AL Gore is not likely to take another VP slot. SO Hagel would have to take the VP slot, & I don't think GOre would consider Hagel a VP. SO just what is Hagel talking up? I would offer this:

Hagel knows if Gore gets in the race, the nomination is Gores for the taking. Assuming Gore gets in... assuming Gore rolls up the nomination, how do you beat Gore? It is likely that no single republican can front a ticket that has a chance to beat Gore, unless Hagel tries the Unity approach. The problem with the Unity approach is that, lets assume Gore is the nominee..

Which Democratic politician would consider running as VP to Hagel? And I mean a DEM that has cred, good solid strong cred. Fiengold? Obama? Hillary, Edwards? Sanders, Conyers, Maxine Waters? I say the list of DEMs who would consider running as Hagels VP is quite small. Damn small. ANd of that list.... there is not a DEM who could help Hagel beat Gore. Or even Obama.

Even if we take Gore out of the equation....

Could Hagel/Wes CLark beat HIllary/Obama ?

Could Hagel/Nader win vs 2 DEMs ?

Could Hagel & a DEM beat Edwards/Obama ?

I would offer that there is no Hagel & a DEM ticket that can beat a DEM ? / ? ticket. Except for something arcane like Richardson & Lieberman.

I think Hagel throws this out, because he doesn't see a standard republican ticket beating a DEM ticket, because the DEM field is so strong. Hagel, I think is showing some vision, he knows Republican chances are slim and he is telegraphing that frame of mind. If Gore is in the race, is there anyone that can beat him? It may be.... that no one can. And Hagel is showing he knows that. Even without Gore in the race, is there a DEM combo that is beatable?

Yes, wierd combos ....Richardson... Lieberman... Nader

Lets get silly.. Lets say the Dem ticket is Kucinich & Bernie Sanders. Can Hagel and a DEM beat that? I dunno.
Kucinich and Conyers?
Bernie Sanders & Fiengold?

It may be that a lot of oddball DEM tickets would beat a combination of Hagel and a DEM.

If I were a republican I would explore the possibilities. The DEM field is strong, and stronger with Gore in it. Hagel is smart enough to know this, and is openly working for an alternate to strengthen the chance of a republican winning the White House in '08.

He he he, good luck pal. I would be working on rebuilding the Republican party, I would offer Deans 50 state strategy as a good starting point.

1. Only a DINO would run with him
Hagel is so right wing on everything except the war no ordinary Dem would be able to support his positions. Maybe Liberworm, but he has been there, done that and would bring no voters to the ticket.

3. Furthermore...
...the only issue Hagel DOES side with us on, is the MAIN issue Lieberman wants to bolt parties over. Hagel is right wing except for the war, Lieberman is becoming more right wing BECAUSE of the war...

2. This idea will die a quick death
The cheap and easy response from any Democratic candidate is to say, "You want a Democrat in the White House? Don't vote for a Republican."

4. With Bush/Cheney flushing things down the toilet
McCain is probably going to be the only Republican still wanting to be president. Well, maybe Duncan Hunter will stick long enough for a VP spot. IOW, the way things are heating up with Iran, the situation in Afghanistan starting to get more attention, and then there's Iraq, North Korea, Israel/Palentine, China (and other) trade issues...well, even Hagel might not want to take the reins on a disaster. Hagel is much to loyal to the party to run a Unity '08 Nadaresque campaign.

Six months is a long time, especially in a political campaign. The Republicans may just decide to cede the 2008 Presidency with a toss-up candidate then blame all things evil on Democrats (rooted in a Democratic majority in January 2007).

Just speculation on my part. Who knows!

10. Why Would Any Real Democrat (Especially Gore) Want Anything to do with Hagel (R. ES&S)?
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 02:08 PM by AndyTiedye
Hagel is a right-wing Repiglican. He is not one of the Mad Cowboys,
which is the only thing that makes him look reasonable by comparison.

And why would Democrats flock to vote for the Senator-ex-Machina?
