Obama shows "stunning" 24-point gain among blacks, but....

CNN: Is black America ready to embrace Obama?
February 28, 2007
From Candy Crowley and Sasha Johnson
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In recent months, ABC News-Washington Post polls showed Sen. Hillary Clinton running 40 points higher than Sen. Barack Obama among blacks voters asked to name their preference in the Democratic primary.

But in Wednesday editions, the Washington Post reported a poll that has Obama leading Clinton by 11 points among black voters -- 44 percent to 33 percent....That change represents a stunning 24-point swing, but does it mean the black community has embraced the Illinois Democrat as its candidate?...

"Obama does have a plurality of black voters right now. He doesn't have a majority yet," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "That means a majority of blacks still aren't sure about him....

Among blacks, Obama's favorables are high (70 percent), but Clinton's are higher (85 percent)....Blacks, in part, may be slow to warm to the candidacy of Obama because, a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll suggests, they are less likely than whites to believe that America is ready for a black president.

The poll, conducted December 5-7, 2006, found that 65 percent of whites thought America was ready, compared with 54 percent of blacks...."There is this doubt 'But is America ready for a black president?' " (George Wilson, the host of XM Radio's "GW on the Hill") told CNN. "And the overall consensus from my callers is that America is not ready for an African-American president."...

Part of Obama's problem with black voters is that he is viewed by whites as the first black candidate with a legitimate shot at the White House.

"When white America has embraced a candidate -- as they have with Barack Obama -- there is a certain amount of distrust that goes with this among a number of African Americans," Wilson said....

1. The most stupid statement I've heard

"When white America has embraced a candidate -- as they have with Barack Obama -- there is a certain amount of distrust that goes with this among a number of African Americans," Wilson said.

Huh? Blacks have voted almost unanimously (around 90%) for ALL of the candidates who have been embraced by whites in the Democratic Party in the last few decades.
What is this crackhead talking about?

2. You would expect blacks to embrace Obama
They have never had a candidate with the appeal of Obama. So why not. The only thing is, I don't think the whole country is ready for a black. Although Obama is really a fresh face and a good guy he won't make it. And while I am at it I don't think they'll go for Hillary either because she is a woman. Two good candidates without a real chance.

7. Well, Giuliani has had 3 wives
Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 10:47 PM by antiimperialist
And only 67% of those surveyed by Gallup
said they would vote for anyone who's married for the third time, compared to 88% who would vote for a woman, and 94% who would vote for a Black.

9. Yeah, all those Black voters in Iowa and New Hampshire...making the primary difference...
It's why other states want to get in there early, too.

But really, it's way too soon to anoint or dismiss anyone.

What happens if Candidate X or Y gets up at Debate Time and stumbles badly? Or makes so much damned sense that people who said "I hate that candidate and won't vote for X or Y" are forced to retract their views?

I'm really getting sick of this media horseshit. Polls without end, AMEN, without ANY debates. New frontrunners, created with media spin and hype. Old frontrunners, who weren't really frontrunners at all, but simply had name recognition, declared passe. A bunch of asshole talking heads telling people what to think, without any direct input from the candidates.

The truth of the matter is, this week's champion could be next week's goat.

It's just too soon. If the media keeps this shit up they'll turn everyone off the process.

The debates will tell the tale, if they're run well and have good moderators.

13. I don't pretend to know more than I know, but I've become acutely
aware that minority precincts are where bad things happen. Ohio, Florida, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Nevada.

I never really knew before 2004 that election theft was a race crime. It is. And the harder you look, the more obvious it becomes.

I don't have any horse in this race unless a clean election becomes a goal, all by itself.

23. That's always been the case. It's no secret that the dead have often lived to vote again in Sweet
Home Chicago, for example. And people can be forced to wait for ten hours in St. Louis for the privilege.

It's also way easier to play games in precincts where there are too many voters and too few places to vote.

It might be time to change the whole system--have voting over a two day period, on a weekend or a holiday, to give more people time and reduce stress and congestion at the polls.

26. People always try to game the system on the backs of the vulnerable
just like Arnold tried to bring his budget under control on the backs of rescue animals and people in wheel chairs, two groups that couldn't easily hit the road and march on the state capitol.

5. No stories about White Americans for Senator Clinton or Latinos for Richardson
The Black vote characterization is as silly as saying all Blacks love hip hop... 'taint necessarily so, 'bro.

24. Or, for that matter, Shitheads for Giuliani
 Sorry, couldn't help it....

But your point is indeed made.

Though I expect, if Richardson does start to see some traction, you WILL see that "Oh, he's of MEXICAN heritage, how does that play amongst the Puerto Ricans/Cubans/Guatamalans/Hondurans and so forth?" story flopping about here and there. Nothing like a little prayed-for infighting to make the tale more interesting. And you'll probably see the "Hillary and the WOMAN vote" (because she's a woman, see?) and it will have a different flavor from that 'soccer mom/security mom' horseshit they've shopped about in the past. It will have a distinct miasma of "MEOW" about it--count on it.

8. All races, ages, economic status, ect., are being drawn in. No one draws crowds
like obama. 7,000 to 22,000. In Ohio he had a fundraiser where he drew twice as many as Bill clinton did a few months ago. And more keep coming. It is so at the indoor places people are turned away for lack of room. Soon he will only be able to hold rallies outside. In Austin, where he drew 20 to 22,000 people they said there were people in the trees. And with that many people, who can bring them all to a hush and then to a cheer.

14. Well now that is all well and good but HRC
never lost the lead and most likely never will.

Each time we hear a talk radio Nazi say "She can't win," it means they're afraid of her.Talk radio whores are saying great things about Obama, which should make you wonder. Why would a facsist bastard say nice things about Obama?

I have nothing bad to say about Obama. If Obama wins - whoever wins the Democratic nomination, I'm behind him/her all the way.(That's a sentence you won't hear from most lefty web sites.)

But seriously, between Obama with two years experience and the only team to win back-to-back presidential campaigns since FDR, (the team that beat war hero Bush and war hero Dole),

...who do you think the super-racist GOP wants to run against?

15. Obama's curriculum vitae includes more than "two years experience"
He had seven years in the Illinois State Senate. That's nothing to sneeze at.

And Obama has that new candidate smell. I think you might be selling him short.

and he will surely be at the top of the VP list if he is not the nominee. He clearly has the ability to energize voters.
