Sen. Jim DeMint's (SC) secret action against Hurricane Victims
Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 06:41 PM by funkybutt
Sen. Jim DeMint, a South Carolina Republican, has stalled legislation that would help many people in New Orleans and along the hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast recover. Mr. DeMint has stalled legislation that would help by preventing some victims from having to use Road Home recovery grants to pay off Small Business Administration loans to repair their storm damage. This is not a duplication of benefits b/c the LOANS have to be repaid and many people need the loans as well as the grant money to rebuild and return to their homes. Sen. Demint tried to keep his opposition hidden by putting a secret hold on the bill. After a few days his cowardice was revealed. He says he is concerned about the cost, estimated at $215 million, which is just a little more than the daily cost of the Iraqi war. Supporters of this bill point out that the loans aren't being forgiven. Sending rebuilding aid back to the federal government instead of putting it to work here where it's needed so much, is just wrong!

I'm getting to the point of NOT PAYING TAXES! For what? War and prisons. If the American people can't get any benefits then fuck it!

4. 215 million? That's such a tiny amount in the budget. .
DeMint must be a very small, mean man.

5. ONLY 6,100 homeowners have received Grant assistance so far
Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 06:59 PM by funkybutt
That's out of 120,000 or so who have applied. SO many who couldnt wait on the state program which is struggling to distribute the federal dollars to desperate homeowners, have gotten a loans to rebuild while they wait. Mass forclosures are expected as people can no longer afford to pay rent and a mortgage on a home they can't occupy (like I did for 8 months).

On Edit: The 6100 figure applies to homeowners who have "closed" on their grants. But that in no way necessarily means that they've received any money at all. The number of those who have actually received money is not listed here --> http://road2la.org/media-center.htm#latest_prog

7. Can you say "Scumbag"?
It just mystifies me why people in the state of South Carolina would want a cowardly a-hole like this guy! Then again, it is a fairly conservative state.

11. Anyone interested in a letter writing/phone call action?
Most people can't take time off to come to NOLA and help. But what you CAN do it write letters and put pressure on, as you please. The people of New Orleans greatly appreciate the ongoing support from activists and volunteers. ANYONE (time permitting) can send an email, write a letter, and/ or make a phone call. This could only take a few minutes, but every minute counts! Your efforts and enthusiam is appreciated.
