Adel Darwish, political editor of Middle East magazine, told Al Jazeera that he had "doubts" about the authenticity of the tape.

"Any kid these days with an electronic kit can alter images and edit the way that he or she likes," he said on Friday.

"There is no close-up of bin Laden, the beard is thick and black and then there are large segments where the image is a still."

The US said that any video message would be closely scrutinised and that efforts to capture the al-Qaeda continued.

Soon after Washington announced it had the video, all the websites that usually carry statements from al-Qaeda went down and were unaccessible, in an unprecedented shutdown, according to the Associated Press news agency.

The reason for the shutdown was not immediately known.

Maybe it was just a bit of CIA photoshopping, perhaps a hired actor, but that guy in the tape is *not* Osama binLaden.

Ever notice how they only release tapes like these at moments most opportune to help the Republicans? Like the anniversary of 9/11? Or when the war is going badly and they need a justification to continue the occupation?

Sadly, a lot of stupid people will buy right into this fearmongering. The Arabs are not as dumb as some might think they are. To their credit, they seem to "get" things we Americans miss...like this phony BinLaden tape. They called BS on that before it was even released!
