R.I. Lawmaker Defects From GOP

State Rep. Richard Singleton, angered by President George W. Bush's handling of the Iraq war, has left the Republican party and registered as an independent.

The move leaves the state House of Representatives with just 12 Republicans, compared with 62 Democrats. Singleton, of Cumberland, will be the lone independent.

"I am a conservative kind of person," said Singleton, 53, who was first elected to the House in November 2004. "My votes aren't going to change. I just don't want to be painted with the Republican brush any longer for reasons that are important to me."
