Rasmussen latest: Obama 47%, Giuliani 42%
Election 2008: Obama vs. Giuliani and Thompson

Friday, September 21, 2007

Senator Barack Obama (D) now leads former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) 47% to 42% in a hypothetical general-election match-up. The latest Rasmussen Reports national survey of the presidential race also shows Obama leading Republican former Senator Fred Thompson 47% to 41%.

In a September 5 survey, Obama trailed Giuliani by a single point but led Thompson by four points. Rasmussen Reports currently polls on this match-up every other week.

A review of recent trends shows that Obama had enjoyed a “lead” over Giuliani ranging from one point to six points in four of the last five polls conducted by Rasmussen Reports. Prior to that, Giuliani had been on top in eight straight polls conducted from November 2006 through June 2007.

Obama has come out ahead of Thompson in nine of nine match-ups to date.

In other match-ups, Giuliani is virtually tied with Clinton, and trails Edwards. Clinton leads the Democratic nomination race by a wide margin.

Senator Thompson is typically weaker than Giuliani against top Democratic opponents. He doesn't always sweep aside second-tier candidates like Senator Joe Biden or Governor Bill Richardson either. But GOP voters tend to see Thompson as more conservative than "America's Mayor." Giuliani is seen as more electable. A Rasmussen Reports analysis suggests that the race is very fluid and there is no clear frontrunner for the GOP nomination at this time.

Obama leads all Republicans in Rasmussen Reports general election polling.

11. He can do as well as he wants with the repukes,
If he can't beat Hillary though it's a moot point. BTW she is also kicking their asses.

15. It would also be a moot point if we Dems are foolish enough to put our eggs in the Hillary basket.
Unless you consider winning the nomination actually "winning"...

13. But three percentage points more prefer Ghoulinani when pitted against Hillary
as opposed to Obama. Similar trend with Fred.

That's the point, isn't it? There's substantial anti-Hillary sentiment, regardless of who the anti-Hillary is.

16. The anti vote will be there no matter who is on offer - elections in the past always see the GOP
vote in the poll move up the closer to the election we get - although final weekend "undecideds" split differently.

20. "Trails Edwards"
Which is to say, Edwards also beats Giuliani, while Clinton does not. But the way they chose to phrase it puts the spotlight on Obama and dismisses Edwards.

22. I think it's because they just did these Obama matchups.
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 08:45 AM by flpoljunkie
They do provide a link to the last Edwards' matchups which were done August 22-23, so expect they will be polling Edwards matchups again very soon.
