The phones started ringing Wednesday: Office, Cleveland cell, Columbus cell, e-mail. What is Dennis doing, they wondered. He voted against health insurance for kids.

SCHIP, or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, is a federal program that expires next week after 10 years. In Ohio, it is administered by the Department of Job & Family Services, and Governor Ted Strickland made its expansion a key part of his budget that GOP Speaker Jon Husted, and Senate President Bill Harris, signed onto with gusto.

1. No ,he's not crazy.
He's stubborn and too idealistic. Sometimes you can't go from zero to 100 in one shot. It's a stupid vote, even for a purist. The article said the vote was going to pass anyway, but does that make it right? If it comes down to overriding a veto, can Dennis be counted on to insure some children as opposed to no children? Because that's what it comes down to. Frankly, I feel lucky this even has a shot of passing at all, with bush's record of "fiscal discipline" he seems to tout so much. Sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and take a small win now, and try for a bigger one from a position of strength (democratic president), rather than taking loss after loss for the sake of your ideals.
