Many GOP Donors Yet to Open Wallets
Source: WP

More than a third of the top fundraisers who helped elect George W. Bush president remain on the sidelines in 2008, contributing to a gaping financial disparity between the GOP candidates and their Democratic counterparts.

Scores of Bush Pioneers and Rangers are not working for any Republican candidate, citing discontent with the war in Iraq, anger at the performance of Republicans in Congress and a general lack of enthusiasm. More than two dozen have actually made contributions to Democrats.

Matt Fong, a former California state treasurer, 1998 U.S. Senate candidate and two-time Bush Pioneer, said that after months of disappointment in the Republican Party, he had hoped to be recharged by the new crop of presidential candidates.

"I have yet to get interested in any of them," he said. "I'm just not happy with the direction of our party. I think we have a huge credibility problem, which I have not seen any of the candidates show the ability to rise above."

1. Every ranger and Bush supporter should be reminded
that this disaster is their fault.

2. Oh, but they meant so well! Bush was such a humble, articulate, lovable guy!
Think about his background, too! A brilliant businessman who was a real tee-totaler!

6. Don't let your hopes get jacked to high...
Big $$$ will flow like high grade crude to the Republican candidate when the conventions are over. There is no percentage at this point in wasting it on the Republican primaries, when it can be better used to influence the Democratic races. These boys are insane, but they are nit stupid, they are handing out zillions to get the 'weakest' Democrat nominee possible.

...just my opinion, but events and such seem to be falling into line with the theory. My opinion is their first choice is Hillary, for obvious reasons(I think they are not grasping the full anti-Republican feelings of the general populace and are counting on 1999 concepts of polarization male threat etc). Their second choice is Obama. Would be their first, but I think they are flummoxed on how to exactly draw out any residual racism without causing backlash, so they are skittish of him. Third is Edwards, they have the least 'ammo' on him, and will have to resort to canned 'librul' attacks...high taxes, spend, spend, spend, weak-kneed. Even they realize that is beyond weak and probably would actually work against them as the poor sonuvapitch Repug candidate would be faced with defending the deficits etc of the past seven years. Kucinich and the rest are not even considered, with good reason, the Party is not about to Dukakis itself this time around. All they hope for is that the Naderites/Ultra-progressives get pissed and either don't vote or vote go with some looney tunes last minute fringe candidate.

At any rate, to summarize, there will be way more than sufficient cash on hand after the conventions, so Democrats had best start putting some aside for donations at that time...the Democratic candidate will need every penny they can beg, borrow(or dare I say it) steal.
