I'm curious what other DUers think. I kind of think it's an anti-Bush protest vote, because I don't like those crazy theories about Republicans acting out "The Sting" every time they do anything.

1. Look at Bush's approvals. Do you think people would be motivated
to go out and protect him en masse in WI without any GOTV effort?

No.

Again, look at Bush's approvals. Do you think lots of Republicans are thinking of voting Dem in Nov?

Yes.

The people in question are people who are enthusiastic about Chimp. Of course people enthusiastic about Bush* will go out and vote for guys they think he can beat--Edwards and Dean. And that's just what they did.

And how do you know that the State Rethugs didn'ty quietly organize an effort? I can't imagine you're pluged into the Wisconsin GOP.

16. I know people who are enthusiastic about Bush who like Edwards more.
If you take the fact that they were willing to get out of the house to vote for him with no GOTV effort targeting them, I think you get a pretty clear idea of how these people rank Bush and Edwards.

12. No
Most republicans would never ever vote dem. Look at Bush's approval among Republicans, it's around 90%. Look at Bush's approval among Democrats. It's still over 20%. We have a lot more work to do than Bush, lol.

17. Speak for yourself. I know many Republicans and Independents who are
very interested in Edwards. Including my one set of family members who are very Republican, and friends of friends who keep telling me about people with whom they work.

2. I think those Republicans who are voting are planning on
voting for the Dem candidate. They realize how polarized the country is, and that the General Election will be viewed by many on either side as a referendum on Bush. This is their only chance to have a say as to whom their next president will be.

6. There is much discontent in the Republican party.
I know that here in Illinois, many genuine conservatives are apalled at Bush, especially the fiscal conservatives, the constitutionalists and the civil libertarians.

I think the votes were genuinely because they like what they see.

10. That won't be an issue in the GE.
They most likely like enough local and State candidates to want to remain R's. That won't be a problem in the GE, where they can cross over from office to office.

20. Voters Enthusiastic about Bush also gave Dean 32% of their vote...
More than a little suspicious, that Kerry's rivals received a total of 86% of those Voters Enthusiastic about Bush--otherwise knows as Republicans.

Some are just playing games in an open primary system.

Some are "Lou Dobbs" Republicans that know you can't keep a stable economy in a country when all the capital goods production is moved outside the country.

21. How many DUers go out and vote for relative wackoes in the GOP primary?
How many of you go and vote for Alan Keyes or Steve Forbes in the Republican party?

GOP Senators and Congressmen are lockstep in the party but GOP voters are not necessarily. Obviously the extreme Bush supporters will go cast ill-intended votes but that's not nearly enough to propel Edwards to 34% of the vote in Wisconsin.
