Presidential Profile: Richardson has big résumé, common touch

I'm having breakfast with the Governor Tuesday morning. More about that late Tuesday night.

COUNCIL BLUFFS - Bill Richardson has negotiated with dictators.

He's been the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary under former President Clinton. If elected, Richardson would be the first Latino president in U.S. history.

He's run a large federal agency - the Department of Energy.

He's the only governor among the Democratic presidential hopefuls.

If experience were the only criterion in presidential politics, Richardson would be one of the top-tier candidates, instead of a dark horse hoping for a late surge in Iowa's caucuses.

Richardson also has the most unequivocal message on the Iraq war - the issue he says "defines the race." He is the only Democratic contender who says all U.S. troops should withdraw from Iraq as soon as possible.

3. That article is a really dead-on description of him, in my view...
He does tend to look a bit nervous, bumble and fumble his words a bit, and just generally not do really well in debates and those sorts of events. But I had the opportunity to see him in person when he came to my small town here in NE Iowa and he was SO much different in person. Very charming, humorous, self-deprecating, and down-to-earth. I was much more impressed with him after seeing him in person. He also laid out his ideas and plans but made it clear that he wanted to hear ideas from all of us and that he was very open to other thoughts and views.

And as for resume's - all this talk about Hillary being the one with the most so-called experience is just laughable to me when you look at Richardson's resume. With the exception of maybe Biden, Richardson has them all beat by a mile in the experience department.

He and Edwards are the only two with anything even CLOSE to a true plan to address energy and global warming - and Richardson's is the more aggressive of the two. THAT is his biggest selling point for me.

I still haven't decided who I am going to caucus for, but Richardson is definitely in my top tier.

I look forward to hearing about your breakfast with him!

4. I like Bill Richardson
because he has endorsed my candidate for U.S. House, Diane Benson.
