Weapons Industry Dumps Republicans, Backs Hillary
The U.S. arms industry has all but abandoned its traditional allies in the Republican party and is putting their money on Hillary Clinton.

The U.S. arms industry is backing Hillary Clinton for President and has all but abandoned its traditional allies in the Republican party.
Mrs Clinton has also emerged as Wall Street's favourite... So far, Mrs. Clinton has received $52,600 in contributions from individual
arms industry employees. That is more than half the sum given to all Democrats and 60 percent of the total going to Republican
candidates. Election fundraising laws ban individuals from donating more than $4,600 but contributions are often "bundled" to
obtain influence over a candidate.

The arms industry has even deserted the biggest supporter of the Iraq war, Senator John McCain, who is also a member of the armed
services committee and a decorated Vietnam War veteran.

Way to go, Hillary! The weapons industry is for the warmonger!

4. That's only the tip of the iceberg.

In the oil and gas industry, Clinton is only beat by Guiliani and Romney in lobbyist donations received ($220,000). In terms of total lobbyist dollars
received, Hillary Clinton beats all Democrats and Republicans, at $567,000, well above John McCain, Chris Dodd, Romney, and Guiliani. Obama and
Edwards have taken fewer lobbyist dollars than even Joe Biden or Bill Richardson - an admirable fact for both their campaigns.

Here's the latest breakdown from OpenSecrets.org

Clinton
88% of her monies come from Individual Donations
1% of her money comes from PACs
56% of her PAC monies come from business groups (Approx $326k)
11% of her PAC monies come from labor

Obama

99% of his money comes from Individual Donations
PAC Money=<1% of his campaign
26% of his PAC monies come from business groups (only apprx $3k)
0% of his PAC monies come from labor
74% of his PAC monies come from single issue voters (only apprx $9k)

Edwards

99% of his money comes from Individual Donations
PAC Money=<1% of his campaign
4% of his PAC monies come rom business groups ($500)
52% from labor (6k)
44% from single issue (5k)

We need to change more than the letter at the bottom of the screen, we need to change the way Washington does business. That begins by cutting
out the lobbyists, and bringing in the people... I forgot to mention the SEC investigation that has opened up into a major Clinton backer InfoUSA, a
database company that donated $1 million dollars to the Clinton library in Arkansas. They also spent $900,000 flying the Clintons to various locations.
They also offered them access to an 80 foot yacht, and a condo in Hawaii.

I have that same sick feeling and I hope Iowans make the right decision.

Do "some" here think that Bush, DeLay, Gingrich, Kristol, and Rove are talking up Clinton because they REALLY think she's so qualified to be president,
so "formidable" an opponent to the eventual GOP nominee when she has the WORST chance of crossover votes and coattails in the general election
because of how polarizing she is? Ugh!

Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 12:49 AM by aquart
They know she's the frontrunner Democrat. They know the Republican is NOT going to win.

If I were an industry that's been very very very bad lately, I would start licking the sensible shoes of the winner damn fast.

On edit: They're not worrying about the war. They are worrying about allocation. We are going to cut weapons systems to build up our armies again. We'll have to. There's no choice. None of them want their weapons cut. So they are moving to build relationships with the incoming administration. I would bet money that the senators from weapon manufacturer states are already sucking up to the blonde lady.

5. I wonder why? I guess it depends on what you mean by the weapons industry.
Is this mith & Wesson, H&R, etc, or is this GE, Rockwell etc? There's a BIG difference, and $52,000 really isn't a lot of money when it comes to "industry support".

9. Allocation.
The Great Bush Giveaway is going to end abruptly and there will have to be brutal cuts in our military weapons systems to rebuild our shattered manpower. Same amount of money, different use.

The Republicans are going to be useless for that, because they won't control the committees and they won't control the White House.

41. That last statement of yours is coffee-spewing hilarious
I assume you're being facetious. But anyway, even if peace "reigns" if Hillary is elected and ushers in the dawning of the age of Aquarius (tm), there are more ways to spend money on the arms industry than invading other countries. We've spent plenty of billions on unneeded weapons during peacetime that has resulted in spectacular profits for arms corporations. And if you think Hillary won't return the favors of people who have funded her campaign, then you're somehow unaware of the oldest rule in politics.

In some ways, 2008 is an even more important election than 2004, because it will determine the future path of the Democratic Party as well
as the nation. Do Democrats become as beholden to corporate lobbyists/large bundlers as Republicans or do we beat back the tide of fascist
plutocracy by saying no to special interest PAC and lobbyist influence in elections/government?

Iowans, please choose wisely.
