What is the deal with Oprah? Is her show that good?

1. I thought I was the only person here who's never seen her show
we are definitely in a minority.

2. I've seen it a couple times
when there was a guest I really wanted to see.

It's good if you like that sort of show. Not really my thing, but it's hard to argue with her success and influence. She has a large audience, undeniably.

4. I've never seen her show and until now thought I was
the only one. Aside from seeing her in a few commercials promoting her show, I hadn't heard her speak until watching a clip of her rally for Obama.

6. Oprah is a bogus media persona, a made up character worth
billions in ad revenue. The "person" you see there doesn't actually exist, it's a act, an illusion.

I love pompous attitudes without the smallest link to back up the nasty assertions, don't you?

18. We're all supposed to pay attention to Obama because Oprah said so.
It's no different than when Oprah endorses any other product.

Have you ever seen the size of the entourage that accompanies Oprah when she is on a tour? There are at least a dozen handlers & Oprah-ettes to make sure that everything is show business perfect at all times.

frankly, I'm thinking mine is more valid. So you don't like her, so what? Stop spewing bullshit without a backup.

Or don't! If it makes you feel better, have at her. You wouldn't be the first.

7. Uninspired meet here, neither have I...but she gets those
people to show up in her audience. She gives away those gifts and all the gullible think they'll be the ones to gets them. Wonder if her audience with Obama think the same thing.

And again I wish some one could tell me how she can fund all those "American Idol" groups for Obama. I thought there was a limit on how much money you could give.

8. I've never watched it.
But I like what she is doing now. I'd feel the same if she was backing any democratic candidate. She is attempting to get people to become involved in politics, and to vote. It's funny how that upsets some people.

29. She did this when she got people involved
in reading, too.

I was working at the library at the time this happened. She made classic books into best sellers all over again. She promoted good authors who would never have sold as well without her endorsement. She changed our selection patterns. For a change, we could invest in a bit less of the junk fiction and buy some things of substance. People began coming to the library whom we had not seen in years, if ever. Oprah told them to read.

If Oprah is going to tell them to vote now, wonderful! If they elect Obama, that is fine with me too, even though I have not yet chosen a candidate. All of our candidates are great. And compared to theirs, they are spectacular.

Think about what else Oprah might be doing. People will vote in primaries. They will vote for candidates downticket that seldom get the support they deserve. Her influence could make a big difference in getting good state and local candidates elected for our side.

I have watched Oprah a few times. She is very good at what she does. I don't know why she is so influential, but thank God she is on our side. Don't we have enough right-wing shouters and haters? If she can counteract some of that and get the vote out, let her.

I would bet that the right wing is trying to dig up all kinds of dirt on her right now. She is the type of person who faces down that stuff and answers it directly. If there is any truth in it, she deals with it. I wish some of our politicians were more like her in that regard.

And the right-wing smear artists better not make up anything too wild about her. Facing the buzz saw and backlash of her angry fans might be too much for O'Reilly and anyone else like him.

9. Never more than a minute or two here or there.
But ever since Michael Moore, only half in jest, suggested she should run for President in 2004, I've tried to take her somewhat seriously as a cultural influence.

11. I've not either.
I went to SC to see Obama. I got there half way through Oprah. She was just introducing him. The only reason some people get all worked up about her is that she did help Obama reach a formidable audience, and the other candidates wish they could create that buzz.

I wanted to see each of the candidates before the primary, but they don't often come near a state with a May primary date. I hope to get a chance when they all flood SC before their primary. I would have see Obama if it had been the maytag repair man introducing him.

13. She brings information to women.
She does a tremendous job of bringing out stuff we need to know but don't talk about because we're ashamed or embarrassed.

She's done amazing work on women's medical issues, even on our boomer questions about aging.

She encourages reading.

She encourages PARTICIPATION with the Angel Network. She empowers by inclusion.

She celebrates achievement. And she brings the achievers on to tell of the moment they took the risk.

There's lots of standard fluff in between. But her popularity, and the trust women place in her, is EARNED.

14. Yeah it is very uplifting and encouraging
unapologetically steared towards women-professionals, moms, middle-to-upper-middleclass- about dealing and managing and the whole thing.

Two things that she has done that directly changed, I guess, this culture

1.right when it was easy money to take talkshows way down the trashheap she pulled back and refused. She deserves a lot of credit for doing that and for showing that she could still make a TON of money doing it-you can do right and not use money as an excuse.

2.She really pushed reading. I have heard several people say that they weren't all that crazy about the books she picks but she brought reading back as a thing to do and to talk about - I have seen perfect strangers use "What are you reading?" to strike up a conversation.

15. She's an inspiration to many people and has been on the tube forever, and
yes, years ago I watched her. She's a philanthropist who has tried to do good in this world, with her fame and her money. She's gotten millions to read, or at least to claim they read which in my book (ha, get it?!) is a good thing.
Her show must be good because she's been on for years; when rumor had it she was closing it down, I recall there was an outcry for her not to do so.

19. I watched it a couple times in the early years & thought it was good
but not good enough where I'd want to tape it and watch it when I got home from working or anything.

Then I watched it a couple more times a year or so ago and Oprah was just acting kind of silly and putting on a big act.

I guess she has a great following, though, especially among women over 55. I'm sure her show's ratings will be dropping drastically after this fiasco.

22. I've never watched her show, however I have watched a couple
of shows about her. I may not agree with her opinion, but that's neither here nor there and it doesn't make me hate her. I do have a tremendous amount of respect for her accomplishments, however, because she beat some overwhelming odds to be where she is today.

24. I've never seen it either
I've only seen the clips that get shown - like when she gave away cars or Tom Cruise jumped on her couch.

Since she has (had?) so much faith in Doctor Phil I can't take her seriously. She is an amazing media person, though, I guess.

26. I used to watch her now and then.
I always felt she was too crocodile-tear emotional, quietly judgemental, scandalistic, egotistical and corporate-tied. But hey, what are you gonna get with a major network slot that people can tune their emotions and opinions on? Perhaps she is a nice person just sharing her wealth and genuinely caring for her T.V. viewers' feelings and all that. I can always change the channel or turn the box off because I live outside of it. As far as her helping to prop up her candidate, hey, more power to him.

I think Oprah will work against Obama in the end. He has gone from 'homegrown' politics to glamor glitz. His wife doesn't' look very happy about it either. She must be smarter than he is. Peace, Kim
