Newsweek used sources "that would embarrass the National Enquirer" on Chavez election fraud story
Media Watchdog Fair.org says today, "As evidence that "Hugo Chávez tried to overturn the results of Venezuela's recent vote but was rebuffed by the military," Castañeda employs sourcing that would embarrass the National Enquirer: "As reported in El Nacional, and confirmed to me by an intelligence source" is the article's entire attribution. Aside from the fact that it would be an impressive trick to rig the outcome of a country that immediately counts results electronically and then samples over half the ballots to make sure they accord with the electronic tally, Newsweek here has neatly used anonymous intelligence to "back up" a journalistic source openly dedicated to overthrowing the democratically elected Chávez. For background on the paper that played a leading role in the 2002 coup against Chávez, see Le Monde Diplomatique: Venezuela’s Press Power (8/02) by Maurice Lemoine:

1. That doesn't even surprise me.
I'd take the National Enquirer over most of the rags like the WaPo, Newsweek, Time or NYTimes any day. Maybe someone needs to sue the mainstream national papers so they'll raise their journalistic standards. It actually worked for the National Enquirer somewhat.

2. Why don't they cover the election fraud right here in the good ole' USA?
There is plenty to keep a few reporters busy.

3. Considering the "journalistic excellence" of the Iraq war coverage, I'm not surprised.
The mainstream media in the United States is owned and controlled by a few huge corporations, who have a great deal to gain from Bush's continued predominance.

6. You mean Joe Klein's Newsweek?
Joe Klein, who basicly accused the Democrats of being traitors and then later admitted he had no idea what he was talking about.. but was somehow not wrong?

Hmmmmmm........
