The TRUTH about Bill Clinton and George Herbert Walker Bush!
Raising money for Tulane students, and Tsunami and Katrina victims.
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1187350,00.html
But by joining forces, Bush, 81, and Clinton, 59, have done remarkable and lasting work in the past year. After teaming together to lead the U.S. response to the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, they suited up again last fall to raise money to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. They put their dormant fund-raising networks on high alert and in eight months have collected more than $120 million for Gulf Coast colleges and universities, churches, and for use by the Governors of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Next week the two men plan to deliver a joint commencement address to the graduating class at Tulane and announce their final $30 million in grants.

The partnership has its advantages, as well as its limits, for both clans. And the two men still have their differences. But Bush and Clinton have created a new postpresidential brand and put it to work sealing the cracks between public need and public aid—and reminded us of what people can accomplish even in an era of deep partisan division.

2. You forgot to mention the deep-sixing of all the outstanding matters in Poppy Bush's

illegal operations being investigated - IranContra, Iraqgate, BCCI and CIA drugrunning. Swept under the oval office rug and protected continually throughout the 90s whenever they would pop up, like in Gary Webb's 1996 report on CIA drugrunning.

http://consortiumnews.com/2006/111106.html

And let's not forget the MAJOR FACT that goes undiscussed by Democrats - that a Dem president PARDONED ANOTHER IranContra operative of Poppy Bush's when he pardoned Marc Rich who was not only a named figure in IranContra, but also a named figure in BCCI, along with Bill Clinton AND GHWBush's longtime benefactor, Jackson Stephens.

Poppy Bush EXPECTED to be impeached after the BCCI report came out in Dec 1992, and Jackson Stephens switched his support to Clinton - and all the many outstanding matters in BCCI just got lost in the new administration.

All that protection of Poppy Bush on those serious matters led this nation directly to Bush2. There should never have been a Bush2 possible, or 9-11, or this Iraq war.

12. Then you can point out in Bill's book how he handled the BCCI report he was handed when
he took office?

Do you expect Democrats here at DU to believe that Marc Rich was not a named figure in BCCI and IranContra?

Do you hope some Dems will CONTINUE to believe that Clinton pardoned Rich because he was a wrongly charged TAX EVADER?

Do you believe BCCI's outstanding matters were NOT pursued because there was nothing important there?

Show me what in this report did NOT bear closer scrutiny, M_P_.

6. I've never seen the problem myself
Ex-presidents form a small, exclusive club and what they have in common, a highest place in American history, must mean a lot to them personally. If John Adams and Thomas Jefferson could manage to overcome differences and forge a later friendship, any of them can. This seems such a small thing to worry about to me.

8. There has been some criticism of this fund
Many ministers and the former head of the United Negro College Fund stepped down because the funds were not being distributed.

There was also an issue with funds being diverted to Neil Bush's educational software company.

11. As a Pair...
working on charity, I agree they have been formidable. I suspect that it is because of Bill Clinton that they have been so successful and the Bush's know this. GHWB on his own would have not been so successful but they couldn't ask Clinton alone, so they teamed him with Poppy to give some validity to their supporters who would have been up in arms if only Clinton had been asked to be involved in the fund raising effort. However, as to someone who needs to be representing the United States as we begin the task of gaining a modicum of our reputation back among the world's nations, I don't think that George H W Bush has any business involved in that process. If we are to believe that Bill Clinton is such a great political mind, and I think he is, then it is very confusing as to why they would bring this up now, unless they are looking for the independent minded NH voter or a very conservative Democrat in Iowa or one of the other very early states, to make them look inclusive. Otherwise he should have kept his mouth shut.

As to the comments about Obama's inclusiveness, I think he's talking more about average people than elected officials when he discusses working together. That's not such a bad message but I think it can also lead to confusion. I for one, don't won't to forgive the 29% so easily, so I hope he is only talking about the rest of the country.

30. You want to go on record that Bill did NOT protect Poppy Bush, go ahead. But you
have no way of showing in his own book how he DEALT WITH all the outstanding matters of real crimes of office in IranContra, Iraqhagate, and most notably, the BCCI report he was handed when he took office and the 1996 report on CIA drugrunning - both of which he never even mentioned in his book.

17. The Crimes of Mena
Barry Seal - gunrunner, drug trafficker, and covert C.I.A. operative extraordinary - is hardly a familiar name in American politics. But nine years after he was murdered in a hail of bullets by Medellin cartel hit men outside a Salvation Army shelter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he has come back to haunt the reputations of three American presidents.

Seal's legacy includes more than 2,000 newly discovered documents that now verify and quantify much of what previously had been only suspicion, conjecture, and legend. The documents confirm that from 1981 to his brutal death in 1986, Barry Seal carried on one of the most lucrative, extensive, and brazen operations in the history of the international drug trade, and that he did it with the evident complicity, if not collusion, of elements of the United States government, apparently with the acquiescence of Ronald Reagan's administration, impunity from any subsequent exposure by George Bush's administration, and under the usually acute political nose of then Arkansas governor Bill Clinton.

The newly unearthed papers show the real Seal as far more impressive and well-connected than the character played by Dennis Hopper in a made-for-TV movie some years ago, loosely based on the smuggler's life. The film portrayed the pudgy pilot as a hapless victim, caught in a cross fire between bungling but benign government agencies and Latin drug lords. The truth sprinkled through the documents is a richer - and altogether more sinister - matter of national and individual corruption. It is a tale of massive, socially devastating crime, of what seems to have been an official cover-up to match, and, not least, of the strange reluctance of so-called mainstream American journalism to come to grips with the phenomenon and its ominous implications - even when the documentary evidence had appeared.

The trail winds back to another slightly bruited but obscure name - a small place in western Arkansas called Mena.

Much more.....
