On Now! (Tuesday 9:00pm to 11:00pm EST)

I personally am still pissed off at Nader, but I think it will be interesting to see how this film is spun.

1. It's pretty commonly agreed that Nader's book was probably the main factor that
got GM and Chrysler to start getting seatbelts in their cars and spread the trend.

3. Yep, that was a new one on me that Ford had a "Safety Package" the GM told them...
...to get rid of it, or else.

I'd never heard that one.

2. Don't be fooled by what they are talking about right now, if you are just tuning in...
...right now they are doing the usual for a documentary and giving a "...how did he become well known..." background info, but at the very beginning of the film they foreshadowed where this is going with a lot of "...thanks for George W. Bush, Ralph..." comments.

7. The Ralph Nader quote I think I heard most in 2000 was, "There's not a bit of difference between..."
"There's not a bit of difference between George W. Bush and Al Gore," :banghead:
and that quote almost always came from Independents or undecided voters. I can't even begin to tell you how many people I tried to convince that that simply was NOT true, but it was no use.

6. I still think Nader is right on

Nader watched the Democratic Party devolve into a bunch of corporate-loving weenies over 25 years.

Nader has been advocating almost nothing that a truly democratic Democratic Party should have been be standing up for.

The real tragedy is that the Democratic Party became too small for Nader and all that he represents.

10. I agree somewhat
Wasn't it disraceful how he was treated at the debate venue. Ugh.

9. Watched it last night
Very good documentary. I appreciated the view of recent history, particularly the 80s as Reagan took office. It showed how the country drastically changed---the determination of Reagan to tear down regulations on industry.

It was good to see the many good things Nader has done, since his legacy has been overshadowed by his ill-conceived (IMO) runs for the presidency. I had forgotten about his effect on the auto industry as far as safety features go.

I was pissed off at Nader's 2000 run since Gore didn't have enough support to outweigh what votes Nader had. But I can forgive him that. One thing is, I think it is true that most of the Nader voters would just have sat out the election. So it wasn't that he "stole" votes from Gore.

But when he ran again in 2004 after we had lived through disaster with the Bush administration and he runs AGAIN, that I don't forgive. It showed a lack of critical discernment.
