In light of our continued skepticism about the ability of Democrats on Capitol Hill to effect substantial change and keep George W. Bush in check, all we really have to lean on is each other.

Just my two cents...

4. Sure. After all...
...who better than the grassroots to make sure our eventual Democratic occupant of the White House doesn't go mushy on us?

5. Perhaps. But It'll be a bit leaner I suspect.
I personally don't anticipate hanging around too much if Senator Clinton is the nominee, but you never know.

7. There's more at stake than the White House in 2008
There's also control of Congress to consider...

17. Maybe one who is a progressive independent and not a Dem?
Not everyone who posts here is a member of the Democratic party.

21. IMO those "progressive independent" types are most unlikely to have a voice in a government that is
either Dem or Repug.

That's their prerogative but the idea behind a party is its members learn that compromise on major issue is absolutely necessary if a party is to effectively govern a nation with so many diverse and often polarizing positions.

25. That's more an indictment of our form of government than my wish to remain unbeholden to a party
But this is not the thread to open that can of worms.

I was just responding to your comment about a Democrat cutting and running from their party. I'm not a Democrat, technically.

14. I hear you...
All the more reason for us to hang together and empower each other to do more than just type on keyboards.

I'm now a precinct chair in Dallas County - and I credit the folks at DU with motivating me to run for the job.

28. Nah...
It's just an acknowledgement that the 2008 nominee is almost certainly going to be one of the current top three. No matter who is chosen, not everyone is going to be happy with the final choice. Same thing happened in 2004. But eventually the Gephardt, Clark, and Edwards backers (as well as most of the Dean and Kucinich backers) decided to get behind the Kerry campaign and push as hard as they could. The grumbling is not going to stop after Denver, but at least we all realize what will happen if a full-fledged Republican winds up in the White House for another four years.
