What are the candidates views on inheritance taxes?
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 03:22 PM by midlife_mo_Jo
I'm all for increasing inheritance taxes on the very wealthy, but not so much on amounts up to about a million dollars. My family has farm land that will be divided up amongst my sisters and me, and I'm wondering just what is considered wealthy these days? It would be nice to actually have a chance to "get ahead" from a future land sale. Or will only the very rich benefit from inheritance, since their inheritances are so large they still come out with a fortune?

I've tried doing some research, but the information I've found always seems to be by someone with an ax to grind - like a nasty republican saying the dems are going to steal all our money. :) I want real facts.

1. Clinton supports it. And I agree with her

(boldfacing is mine)

Clinton said people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet were against doing away with the estate tax, because they made it on their own. She went on to explain, to applause, that a married couple could have an estate worth up to $7 million before getting taxed, and said she considered that a "pretty healthy estate to leave to your children."

The so-called "death tax" is a Republican propaganda success. Thanks to endless Republican distortion of this issue, all sorts of families of modest means are convinced that the government is going to confiscate their inheritance or take away the family farm. Not true.

Someone (perhaps it was George Lakoff) has suggested that a better name for the "death tax" would be the "dead billionaire's tax." Keep in mind that this is the same outfit that brought you "Clear Skies" (self-regulated polluting), "Healthy Forests" (clear-cutting), and "the surge" (escalation of an illegal occupying force).

3. Richardson supports restoring the Dynasty Tax for the wealthiest
However, under the plan he supports unless you have a farm estate worth several million dollars, you won't owe estate taxes on it. Even then the taxes are low on farms. I believe that even before the Shrub Inc cuts, only less that a percent of the farm estates owed taxes. I remember during the debate on it, Shrub Inc was challenged to find a farm estate that faced such high taxes that they were forced to break it up and sell it off and they couldn't. I don't have the link handy but the GAO did several good reports on the Dynasty tax and you will not have to worry about it at all for a million dollar farm estate.
