I am telling you.
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 07:57 PM by Tennessee Gal
Today I spoke to Democrats here in Tennessee who are afraid of Obama. It embarrassed me. They believe he is a Muslim. It emabrrassed me. They believe he will lead to the end of the United States. It embarassed me. I tried to reason with them. They would have none of it. And these are Democrats, not Republicans. It embarrassed me.

Edit for spelling.

I'll just talk about the general election here and then I'll come back to your comments (and didn't I say something about voter fraud all day yesterday and no one listened?) The Republicans will have a plan no matter who we pick and it will be like this:

Hillary Clinton is a witch a whore and murderer
Barak Obama is a Muslim, a socialist, etc.
John Edwards is gay, a communist whatever etc, etc,

Bill Richardson is etc etc

It doesn't matter. They play dirty. And they will infiltrate our party and place lies in and send stupid emails making accusations.

So beware my friends and only accept what you can verify as true before you pass it on.

36. Sadly, I saw it in AR too
My dad, for one.

He said he wanted Edwards, saying he'd "never vote for someone whose name I can't pronounce". I told him Edwards didn't want his vote if that was how he felt.

At least my mother (they are divorced) doesn't feel that way. She wants Obama.

I mentioned another coworker, and while I don't know exactly where she stands as far as who she has voted for before, but she said she wouldn't vote for Obama because he was too "foreign".

I posted about this in another thread, but I think that this is how the racism that may affect Obama among some voters will be couched. I don't think it's right at all, and have tried to correct those who do.

I'm still a Hillary supporter, but if you're going to attack someone attack them on their record or lack thereof, not the religion of their grandfather or the color of their skin.

SUSA's latest poll of Iowa shows Obama with ridiculous leads on his GOP rivals. I've edited in the results from SUSA's last Iowa poll 12/13-15.

Today, 01/07/08 …

Obama defeats McCain by 17 points. (+12)
Obama defeats Huckabee by 23 points. (+13)
Obama defeats Romney by 26 points. (+12)
Obama defeats Giuliani by 40 points. (+19)

Today, 01/07/08 …

McCain defeats Clinton by 4 points (within the margin of sampling error). (-1)
Huckabee and Clinton tie. (+1)
Clinton defeats Romney by 8 points. (+3)
Clinton defeats Giuliani by 16 points. (+5)

He has the reverse Rudy effect.

I have a friend who had a terrible time in Tennessee where she was going to college. She observed a lot of bigotry. She is a strong woman who speaks up and from New York. She has very short hair. She was in a car accident and while a lot of white people just hung around and watched, it was a black woman who came forward and helped her. She really had a strong sense of being "the outsider."

Do you have all the necessary links for places to go to for the correct information about Senator Obama? If not, I can provide them.

and they will NEVER in a million years vote for Obama because he is black. They still let the "N" word fly without any problems. Even their small children say it whenever they speak of someone who is African American. I just don't think he will swing some of these states in the south. Racism is still alive and well. I also know what you mean about having relatives here who are racists too. It is mostly the older ones like my Dad and Step-Dad for me. My Dad always called them the "n" word but has now progressed to calling them "Africans" How politically correct. You should have seen his face when I told him, as an adult, that my first boyfriend/first kiss was African American and he was the sweetest thing!!! LOL! For the record they would have voted for Edwards because they will never vote for Obama and they can't stand Clinton. They liked Bill Clinton a lot, but not his wife. But they can never really come up with a reason to hate her and I think it is because she is a woman. As my daughters have told me....We will just have to wait until all of these crusty old white people die off so that their generation can make things better for blacks and for those who are gay. One can only hope.

I'm embarassed too but my mom just informed me that my great aunt and uncle will vote republican for the first time in their lives if Obama is the nominee. She didn't ask why, because she just knows. Now, they don't use the "n" word. Still, they're 75 years old and racist. But, what sucks for Obama is that 75 year olds always vote. Of course, people here will say we don't need the racist vote. But, there is still a soft racism across this country that persists in the baby boom generation too. It really scares me, but it's true. I just wish he would have waited this one out until the country had a chance to get to know him better. Just my opinion.

My husband was born in Tampa, FL and that's how I got here, but right after I married him I couldn't believe what HIS family thought AND said about blacks. I let them know right away how I felt and I NEVER let any of them talk badly about them. I AM an Edwards supporter, but maybe you just have to live down here to understand. At least Obama has that ability to make people swoon and cry. He might be able to change their minds once they hear him speak. But Hillary? They hate her more with every word she utters. There's nothing she can do to win them over.

Seriously, there is a racial bias more so in the south, we keep hearing. So this does not surprise me.

Don't worry. Obama is not expected to win a number of the southern states, anyway. His staff knew this going in, I'm sure.

Are they scared of Hillary being a "weeping woman" who will throw her hands up in despair about the problems of America, and thrust the country into turmoil?

racist enough to believe shit like that are voting Republican anyway. Yes, there is still bias in the South.. but no more than anywhere else and for god's sakes, let go of the stereotypes. Not you, just in general. We actually did move into this century with everyone else.

50. They're voting for the white person, not the Republican -- or the Democrat.
That's the difference. She just said these are Democrats. This is pitiful, but it's not about party affiliation. It's about people. It is not ok to say that 'oh these people vote Republican'. No.

These people are *Registered Democrats*.

Why are registered Democrats feeling this way?

(and yes, we have to consider that there may be a Bradley effect for women as well; but if there is........... what does that say about the success of women versus blacks in America? it may be good, but it also just may be that race trumps gender after all.)

This has to be examined. And it has to be dealt with. Why concede otherwise faithful Democrats votes to Republicans? It's the same as saying the Democrat party might as well never run blacks except in specially gerrymandered districts because otherwise faithful Democrats will vote white Republican.

Doesn't that bother you?

How can this be rectified? How can the soul of the Democratic Party be made purer and cleaner? Just waiting for them to die? or is there a way to change hearts and minds?

I really think that Obama can be that change in hearts and minds.

We just have to be dilligent about getting real information out there.

67. I agree that Obama might be able to change hearts and minds if he's a good
President (and god help whoever steps into that office next). If he screws up, it'll be because he's black. If he does well, I'm hopeful that people will stop SEEING him as black.

I THINK people stopped viewing Colin Powell that way.

97. That's something that worries me about a Obama or Clinton presidency
That if either screws up, it'll be because of their being woman/non-white. I think either would make a fine president though.

Also, I think some would use voting for Obama as "absolution" from prejudice. "I voted for Obama" will become the new "Some of my best friends are black.

Oh well, baby steps I guess.

45. Southern Democrats
... there are a lot of Southerners who are registered Democrats, and vote for Democrats for local and state offices, and many times for House and Senate, but have a long voting record on presidential elections for going Republican.

And those are the ones that are going to be targeted by the Republicans who attack our nominee for her gender, his race, or his $400 haircuts.

I've had a hard time watching "Washington Journal" for a long time due to the sheer ignorance of many of the callers. I'm not surprised that the myth that Obama is Muslim is being espoused there.

Don't forget that once they decide he's Christian, they start attacking his church... that because they say on their website "We are an African people, and remain 'true to our native land,' the mother continent, the cradle of civilization" that he's not patriotic, and pull out that video of him failing to put his hand over his heart while the National Anthem was sung.

It's a shame. It's a damn shame.

TG, you can't worry about them. And you can't browbeat them into an epiphany just because they like you (as I think has happened elsewhere); all you can do is tell them the truth. Those emails should have never went out from those two Clinton aides :( but I guess the problem started long, long before them. They just got the information from the rightwingers, right?

I'm glad the Clintons canned them. I hope the Clintons had nothing to do with sending them out. I really hope.

Just give them the truth. Let it percolate. Be as graceful and dignified as Obama. Don't make it about his race. Keep making it about policies.

And then, try to get them to hear him speak when (if?) he's in Tennessee. It might not change many minds, but it may change some.

There's a horrible problem in this country. It just makes Iowa seem that much more significant. I hope Iowa wasn't a fluke.

This can be done, though.

Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 08:32 PM by Anouka
It is not a party problem. It is a people problem.

Democrats need to deal with the fact that: yes, Virginia, racists are in the Democrat party, too.

Instead of ignoring, we need solutions for it. These people do vote Democrat. They just won't vote for black Democrats. It's not ok that they will vote by race. It's not ok at all. That damages the Democratic Party, and makes it look like a party of hypocrisy.

We can do better.

In the meanwhile, maybe, just maybe, 'clean, articulate' (good lord, Biden.. but now I think there was a method to his madness) respected Barack Obama can be part of that solution.

of these pathetic smear-Obama e-mails every day! His point was that this smear campaign is already operating at full steam and there is going to be a certain percentage of the population that unfortunately will get suckered by this crap and this will become cemented in their minds.

He stated that Obama needs to get in front of this quickly and directly - a caller to his show contradicted him somewhat, saying that until the Republican nominee is essentially decided, there is no one for him to actually confront and say "Do you agree with this?"

Edit: I forgot to add that he thinks that the religion thing (false Muslim charge) is MUCH more likely to be the central theme of the smear campaign than his racial background, simply because anti-Muslim sentiment is "acceptable" in the eyes of many more people...

Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 12:06 AM by ooga booga
The problem for us Democrats in the middle of the country in "Flyover America" is that we can see that the Democratic Party doesn't seem to be tuned in to the way things are and what we see all around us in our section of America. Then, after the presidential election is over when it's too late to do anything, everyone's looking at the electoral map and saying, "Wow! Look at that huge mass of RED in between the coasts! What happened there?"

In 1988, Michael Dukakis happened. In 2004, John Kerry happened. In those two cases, neither of those two Bay Staters appealed to Middle America nor knew how to reach out to Middle America, but both managed to capture the Democratic nomination and drive it into the ditch. The same scenario is quite possible if Hillary Clinton gets the nomination. I'm also worried about Barak Obama, but less worried than about Hillary. I see John Edwards as the best chance to get a good outcome in "Flyover America." Now, he could have trouble, too. I just think he'll have a better chance in the middle of the country. Sad to say but part of it is because he's not black and he's not Hillary Clinton.

She said she was afraid he might be one of the fundamentalists. I truly do not understand it.

As someone originally from Tennessee, I do know how many people from this area receive this kind of false notion -- it spreads through the politicians who have grips on church congregations (I say THAT from experience within my own family) and through other organizations such as work places. People do not do a lot of their own research; they simply take what they are told from people they trust as, pardon the expression, gospel.
