Unite-HERE ad: "Hillary Clinton does not respect our people." - "Hillary Clinton is shameless."
Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 06:01 PM by jefferson_dem
Unite-HERE ad: "Hillary Clinton does not respect our people."

The radio ad aired by one of Obama's labor allies re-injects ethnicity into the contest in sharp terms.

"Hillary Clinton does not respect our people," the ad says, in Spanish (original and Clinton campaign translation after the jump), referring to the lawsuit that failed today to shut down special caucus sites on Las Vegas's strip. "Hillary Clinton is shameless."

"Senator Obama is defending our right to vote. Senator Obama wants our votes. He respects our votes, our community, and our people. Senator Obama’s campaign slogan is 'Si Se Puede'. Vote for a president who respects us, and who respects our right to vote," the ad says, according to a transcript provided by the Clinton campaign and confirmed in part by a union official.

On a conference call arranged by the Clinton campaign, two of her supporters denounced the spot and demanded that Obama distance himself from it. They also said the Clinton campaign had no involvement in the lawsuit, which was filed by Clinton supporters and defended by Bill Clinton.

"It’s pathetic and it's sad and it's unfortunate that they have to stoop so low," said Dolores Huerte, a longtime Hispanic labor leader who supports Clinton. She said she had never met Obama in her years of working on Hispanic causes, and suggested the ad was prompted by his lack of Hispanic support.

"I have yet to find even one worker – a Latino worker – who is supporting Barack Obama," she said.

The political director for Unite-HERE, Tom Snyder, confirmed a portion of the transcript, and defended the decision to run it.

"We're doing this because forces allied with her campaign are trying to keep our members out of voting through this lawsuit, which neither Senator Clinton nor former President Clinton have denounced," he said.

A spokesman for Obama, Bill Burton, did not condemn the ad or the spending specifically, but instead attacked Clinton.

"Senator Obama believes, and has said clearly, that campaigns should fund themselves and discourages supporters from spending outside the campaign," he said, and echoed the charges in the ad. "Coming from a campaign that is repeatedly launching absolutely false attacks against Senator Obama, it takes some chutzpah. The facts is their camp clearly would like to have worker's voices silences and they need to live with that unfortunate position."

It seemed like a good idea back when the party assumed Hillary wouldnt have any competition.

Funny how that worked out, isnt it?

14. I'm against caucuses since it severely depresses
participation in the primary.

only one caucus state participation >10%.
only one ballot state participation <10%

Caucuses should be eliminated.
My guy Edwards did great in the Iowa caucus. But I still object on the grounds that it reduces voter involvement.

We already have way too much peer pressure on our society and having a secret ballot is truer democracy.

How long has she been in Nevada? Even if Obama is going to poll 10%, I doubt there's not one Latino supporting him. I'm surprised that someone with such a great background would be so partisan.

I literally cannot believe i'm here arguing with Dems about the importance of voting rights.

45. Question -- wasn't the comment by Dolores Huerta (who I greatly admire) no less "ethnic"
This overparsing really reflects the degree to which many mainstream Democrats drink the Kool-Aid of 'reverse racism'. And no, neither black solidarity nor Latino solidarity are "racist". I would agree that the likes of Khallid Abdul Maurice Templesman Muhammed secularly put forward a worldview that was anti-white racism. But UNITE HERE?

Too (selectively) purist by half

23. It Goes Both Ways.
This past weekend I saw a Hilary pollster who is latino say that Latino's wont vote for a black person. They rather vote for a white person instead. That sickened me as a black woman. Hey don't vote for him because of the issues is fine. But not voting for him because he's black is wrong. Ugh and I'm suppose to feel passionately now for latino issues like immigration now when people hardly talk about Haitian immigration?

The race baiting is going both ways and its truly sickening.

35. Thanks for saying that.
My co-worker said that some latinos do identify themselves as white so he could see some people in this group not voting for Barack because of race. I was just heart broken because I've always supported latino culture, hell I support anybodies culture really. But to hear something like that really hurt because I'm black.

Thanks for the comment because I think its time for all ethnic groups especially Latinos & Blacks to say we aren't supporting this or that candidate because of race.

that's the whole thing... you can't pigeonhole an entire group of people one way or another.

All I can hope is that people see that it's nonsense. No group of people - not any racial group nor any gender group - will ever split evenly along any lines. There are too many independent thinkers. Thank God! :)
