Obama supporters! Stand up and fight!
Don't let the bastards grind you down. Our candidate is the best candidate for the job, and we don't have to apologize to any party hack, internet troll, or freelance bloviator. Stand up and fight to the end!

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3634531032327150806&q=dropkick+murphys+gauntlet&total=50&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

They won't get me they won't get me
though they never cease to try
they won't get me they won't get me
I would rather fight and die
they won't get me they won't get me
well my friend will they get you?
when they get you when they get
you tell me what you gonna do?

Do you think we're gonna make it?
I don't know unless we try
you could sit here scared to move or we could take them by surprise
it's submission that they want
it's surrender that they need
when we're doing it their way their aims will be achieved

They're gonna come when you're not ready
when you're not to well-prepared
they're gonna prey upon your weakness no man's soul is ever spared
you've got to stand up, yeah, and fight them
show them what it's all about this man is not for sale there will be no backing down!

Stand up and fight and I'll stand up with you!
We shall succeed
Stand up and fight and I'll stand up with you!

1. But who does Obama decide to "stand up" with?
Oh yeah....an "ex-gay" clown bigot who helped him win back all those religious bigot votes in South Carolina.

6. Troll?
Dude, you have me confused with someone else.

Why hasn't Obama apologized for hosting a bigot on his campaign event stage?

9. Cults are binary... inside/outside, and deny the possibility of honest opposition
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 12:04 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
All those outside the cult are acting in bad faith, as enemies of the cult.

So, if you're not inside the circle you're a troll. No impartial party could credibly criticize the cult because the cult is the definition of the good.

It's like when Republicans dismissed Joe Wilson's comments with, "He has admitted he voted against Bush in 2004."

And Wilson responded, "these guys outed my god damned wife as a covert CIA operative! Of course I voted against them in 2004."

3. everyone should find a couple positive Obama threads to
kick up top. If we all do a few maybe we can ease the baseless relentless attacks.

5. I would help but I am waiting for a New Deal clarification.
Seeking confirmation that Obama did or did not disparage the New Deal in one of his books.

I'm a New Deal fan, so that kind of Hayek/Friedman foolishness will turn me against Obama. If so, don't worry, I'll still support (D) in November, even a New Deal basher.

7. Seems a bit silly. He is liberal like FDR...
They share the same philosophy and generally the same policies. But let me know what you find out.

8. I would have assumed so, especially as a (D) candidate.
I don't have any Obama books handy, and haven't seen any replies on any posts here at DU. If someone does have his books, New Deal is probably in the index...

10. You're on.
I have both books. Dreams from My Father doesn't have an index, but that one's just pretty much autobiographical anyway.

According to the index, The Audacity of Hope mentions the New Deal nine times. I'll post regarding those references as soon as I have a chance to review them all.

Will that make you happy?

16. Thanks for looking!
I don't know which book (and don't have search access on DU, so I'm not sure of the exact quote). I'll guess it is in The Audacity Of Hope (because I recall some snarky references to it, though that may have been elsewhere). The general theme seemed to be that the New Deal was mistaken, possibly excessive (or something like that).

It isn't unusual for people to rip on the New Deal, the Hayek/Friedman/ChicagoSchool (AKA Free Market pimps) have been quite successful in their effort to mangle economic common wisdom. So an honest answer is the best way to make me happy (even though it might upset me in terms of campaigns). I have been trying to remain neutral on candidates, though it is getting tougher to do so as my Primary voting date approaches.

BTW, even Bush seems to be returning to Keynesianisms now that their bubble is popping all over global markets.

18. You're very welcome.

I fully expect you to become part of Team Obama once you read all these complete quotes from Obama's book!

Because I'm not sure if the four-paragraph rule applies solely to articles or if it also applies to books, just to be on the safe side I'm posting the first of the nine New Deal references here, then the others in two new threads with four paragraphs in each thread. OK?

Barack Obama on the New Deal: References from The Audacity of Hope (hard cover edition).

(1) p.26: Still, there's no denying that American politics in the post-World War II years was far less ideological -- and the meaning of party affiliation far more amorphous -- than it is today. The Democratic coalition that controlled Congress through most of those years was an amalgam of Northern liberals like Hubert Humphrey, conservative Southern Democrats like James Eastland, and whatver loyalists the big-city machines cared to elevate. What held this coalition together was the economic populism of the New Deal -- a vision of fair wages and benefits, patronage and public works, and an ever-rising standard of living. Beyond that, the party cultivated a certain live-and-let-live philosophy.

New Deal references 2-5 are _here_ and 6-9 are _here_.

23. I'm on Team (D).
Unteam, that's what I am trying to avoid. :)

That is pleasant, and encouraging. I hope there aren't any discouraging remarks following it, as I value that vision.

Thank you for posting! I'll read the other posts now...

29. There is more, of course.
It's way too much to reproduce here and I do suggest you beg, borrow, or buy the book to get the whole picture.

In essence, he says that throughout the 50's and early 60's, the "culture did not yet possess the vocabulary to force discomfort, much less political dispute, around such issues" as race and feminism. That all changed, of course in the late 60's and 70's, and he goes on to describe the social and political dynamics of the time.

It's very, very interesting, and I do think you'll find it enlightening and heartening.

"Knowledge is the beginning of insight"... or something like that, since I may have quoted incorrectly. :P

25. Reality Check
Gary Hart, Paul Tsongas, Bill Bradley, Bruce Babbitt, and Bill Clinton were all talking about the limitations of the New Deal approach as far back as the mid 1980s. There's nothing wrong with asking whether solutions designed for a 1930s industrial age society can work effectively in a technologicaly based economic and social environment.

26. I don't disagree.
But if Hayek or Friedman are invoked, directly or indirectly, then there is a huge reality check being cashed, right now, on Wall Street and around the planet.

At the moment I'm not completely sure where Obama stands but in thanks to the efforts of silverweb I am going to try to help lower the heat. Obviously I'm not doing very well so far. :)
