Hillary Clinton reveals personal anguish over Lewinsky saga

Hillary Clinton reveals personal anguish over Lewinsky saga

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Hillary Clinton said in an soul baring interview aired Friday she never doubted her husband's Bill Clinton's love for her, despite the former president's affair with a White House intern.

The former first lady, locked in a tight battle for the Democratic presidential nomination with Barack Obama, candidly revealed her inner torment after the infidelity, first reported 10 years ago.

"I really had to dig down deep and think hard about what was right for me, what was right for my family," Clinton said on the Tyra Banks talk show on Fox television.

"I never doubted Bill's love for me, ever, and I never doubted my faith and my commitment to our daughter and our extended family.

"But I had to decide what I ought to do, I think it is so important to be able to hear yourself at a moment when it is hard ... there are so many times when you really have to listen to yourself."

Asked by Banks whether she was embarrassed by Clinton's relationship with Monica Lewinsky, which eventually led to his impeachment, she said "sure, all of that."

"The momentary feelings -- you are mad, you are really upset, you are disappointed, all of that goes through your mind.

Nice strategy.

said it's personal and i don't want to discuss it.

Had he done that in the FIRST place, they wouldn't have tried to impeach him.

23. I think you underestimate the right wing's determination
to destroy the Clinton presidency, especially since it was their publicly stated goal. Why on earth do you believe they wouldn't have tried to impeach him if he'd just remained silent? There was that Paula Jones court case, after all - are suggesting he should have told the court that he didn't want to discuss it?

I don't envy her that ; and I don't doubt her sincerity, but I'm sure no one would deny Hillary weighed everything against her own political future.

And let's face it, Bill is one ultra charming guy, and in this respect she's certainly as susceptable to this as anyone, I would posit possibly moreso.

that HRC is doing this. I've only watched a small portion of only one Tyra Banks show and it was pretty awful.

Am I being a snarky snob to be so bewildered that HRC would go on this kind of show and talk about her private business, which is none of our business? I've always thought that she was right to not get into the whole Monica thing in public, because it drags down the debate and political atmosphere. Or maybe I'm just an old fogey. I think I'd rather do anything rather than subject myself to such exposure...

I am appalled...

She's going after the votes of young African American women an she's going for the pity vote by sending out a message that says something like "I'm a long suffering woman just like you".

smear machines ability to use it against her.Speaking to women does not constitute "going after the pity vote". If she didn't bring it out,she would be accused of ignoring the elephant in the room. From what I saw of it,I saw no wallowing in pity, just pretty plain language about how she felt about it.

or at least for the tabloid-style audience....

Can't say that I think dredging all that stuff up again makes much sense. But then again we have never had the wife of a previous president run for office and be questioned on all of that President's past "baggage." It's a very odd and complex scenario and you can't avoid some aspects of that subtext.

16. Nice strategy, indeed...
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 02:30 PM by TwoSparkles
Many people assert that Hillary's NH-emotional moment was staged. I don't
think it was. I think it was clearly genuine and due to the fact that she
was frustrated, tired and the polls had her behind in NH--after placing 3rd in Iowa.

I do think it was that teary moment that won her the election. I think the win shocked
her campaign, as well as Hillary. Her campaign saw the emotional moment as a turning
point--after losing in Iowa and being behind all week in NH. They decided to parlay
that emotional moment into more winning moments--and we're seeing that in NV with
Hillary's appearance on Tyra.

Hillary's entire NH election-night speech capitalized on that moment. Hillary had
found her voice.

Now, her campaign is attempting to re-create her NH win in NV---by engaging showing that
Hillary is human and vulnerable--just like the rest of us.

I really don't think there's anything wrong with this from a political/PR standpoint. They're
trying to win an election. They found a winning formula and they're using it again.

Will this work? Who knows. This time, Hillary's "emotional moment" is pre-planned and
lacking the spontaneity of the her NH moment. Plus, many will (and are) accusing her
of capitalizing on her first emotional moment and and rolling that ploy into more winning
moments.

So we'll see. I don't think it will have near the impact that her NH moment did.

All candidates engage in these types of strategies. It's not evil or bad. It is what it is...politics.

83. I hear ya...
From a PR perspective, it's interesting what she's doing.

The assumed this will work in NV, because it worked in NH.

I don't know if the average voter will think too deeply about what she's doing.
They might just see a tough woman who overcame obstacles.

However, this is campaign season. She's not defending herself. No one brought up
this subject first, and attacked her.

There are plenty of ways to show that you're sensitive and caring. You can talk
about aspects of your personal life that don't involve your husband boinking an
intern.

This has a real strange ring to it---using your husband's infidelity to demonstrate
how sensitive you are.

I don't think the Clintons realize how that subject reminds us all of the worst
part of the Clinton years and how Bill Clinton and his behavior derailed our
entire country and enabled Bush garner votes using the "I'll restore integrity to
the White House" meme.

I dunno. I understand what they're doing, but this campaign hasn't exactly impressed
me with their brilliant strategies. Look at her complete failure in Iowa--due to
so many colossal blunders.

Saturday will be interesting, that's for sure.

A ploy for sympathy has to to involve someone humiliating themselves or showing their "softer" side.

96. It won't be Guiliani in the GE
the Repugs just aren't that stupid. And if they are then we know something funny is going on . . .

And, this will come up, maybe it'll be in emails (kind of like Clinton's Obama emails) But, regardless, it'll be there.

What looks better to an evangelical? Bill and Hillary or Huckabee and whoever his wife is?

Which is more Wholesome?

69. This is my take on this issue.
Hillary knows that this topic is going to come up in the GE and she's doing a preemptive strike by putting out her own version of events. Who here thinks that the Repugs won't bring it up?

There's also that hit job book that's coming out on her marriage, more fodder for the grist.......

86. she goes on tyra but won`t do a vogue photo shoot?
"But Wintour didn't take Clinton's dis lightly. In her February editor's letter, Wintour takes Clinton to task for being behind the times.--->

"Imagine my amazement, then, when I learned that Hillary Clinton, our only female president hopeful, had decided to steer clear of our pages at this point in her campaign for fear of looking too feminine. The notion that a contemporary woman must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is frankly dismaying."

"Vogue has featured Sen. Clinton with her family and by herself in sizeable features six times since 1992, and she was the first first lady to appear on the magazine's cover, in December 1998."

88. Funny how the Clinton people are constantly reminding of the attacks that would come against Obama
- all the while making those attacks themselves - when the BIG ELEPHANT in the room is the Clinton marital infidelity saga. It brought a nation to its knees in the 1990s. I have always felt the MSM were complicit, but it was Bill Clinton himself that gave the Republicans the ammunition.

Well, kids, if Hillary gets the nod, look forward to 24/7 coverage of Bill Clinton's zipper. And, yes, I do blame him for providing the ammunition for that witch hunt.

89. People @ DU are going to bash her because of this...
I see this as a pretty damn smart move, though.

Think about it - everybody ALREADY knows FAR more than they want to about this and it is BOUND to be brought up by some RW M$M scumbag at SOME point.

She goes on Tyra's show and gets to target the EXACT demographic she is looking for - female, African-American, Southern, 30-65. She ges to come off as a dogged, faithful fighter telling a victim's tale, and she gets to do this with pretty much the most sympathetic audience she could hope to find anywhere in the US. And the demographic fits exactly her target demographic for the SC Primary. Genius.

She is getting out in front of this - addressing it in HER words, in her time, to her audience.

I think this was a brilliant move, and I can't see how it backfires (famous last words) on her.

I am no Hillary fan, but even I must say: "BRAVA!"
