Poll question: Have You Always Been A Registered Democrat?
Or have you switched parties since you first registered to a political party?

You know, the definition of Reagan Democrat is a democrat who votes for republicans.

Well, of course, you ARE a hillary supporter...

4. I was an independent and then a registered Democrat.
I think I still have my first voter registration card, too, somewhere around here.

It took me a couple of elections before I registered as a Democrat.

14. Same here.
My first elections were during the Clinton vs. Gingrich era. I didn't want to be associated with either.

I've always been a liberal though

5. Born and raised one.
My dad was a die-hard Roosevelt Dem. My mom was initially a Republican, but she never said much about politics. That was in the Eisenhower years anyway. By the time Nixon and Reagan came around, she had changed her tune considerably, and I believe was regularly voting Democratic before her death in 1999.

you must be young . It was startted in the late 60's I think, or early 70's during the VN war to suit the needs of the left. It is still on the ballot every year in CA

16. Independent until the theft 2000. I immediately swithced Dem. You can say I am
an "Election theft Democrat" - which, judging by what I saw on DU at the time - on the whole net in fact - is probably a huge demographic, never recognized by the MSM marketing mavens.

20. I've always voted Democratic
but here in SC you don't have to declare a party when you register so it's been a lot of years since my voter's card has reflected a party choice.

I was a Reagan Democrat too
I voted for Reagan in 1980, changed back to Democrat in 1984. I registered Republican to vote for Ross Perot in the 1992 primary but voted Democrat in the general since Ross didn't make it. Registered Republican again to vote for John McCain in primary then voted Democrat since John McCain didn't make it. This year I am going for John Edwards and in the general will vote Democrat unless Obama is nominated then I am not sure know what I will do..

25. Party registration is not required in this state
But I've been a Democrat since I was 14. Never voted for anyone else in a General Election. I did vote for McCain in the 2000 Repuke primary, just to vote against the Chimp.

The 2000 election theft sickened me. Especially when not one Senator would stand with the Congressional Black Congress when they challenged the compromised electoral votes.

The 2002 election season sickened me even more when far too many so-called Democrats voted again and again to give the Moron whatever he wanted, including that goddamned resolution that he eventually used as an excuse to invade Iraq based on lies. And then they LOST the election anyway.

I seriously considered leaving the party at that point. Hearing a speech from a man named Howard Dean was the only thing that changed my mind. Of course we all know what the corporatists would eventually do to him. And then to Kerry. And another election stolen in 2004.

2006 gave me hope. Spineless Reid and Jellyfish Pelosi destroyed it. If Hillary Clinton is nominated, it's over. Not for me, for the party.

26. Question from a foreigner
What is the advantage of registering for a party when you enroll to vote? Do you have to register? I note some posts above saying that registration is not available in some states. Why?

Thanks in advance

Peace

So your either a registered democrat, independent, or republican.

31. In the general election anyone can vote for anyone -
the reason to register to a party is to vote in the primary election, and help select that party's candidates. In the primary you only vote for the candidate of the party you are registered for, so you don't have people voting against the strongest person in the opposite party - of course, they still can, but in that case they can't vote for the person they like in their own party.

That holds with most states, but not all - some states have peculiar primary voting, where anyone can vote for anyone in a free-for-all, which explains why some primaries are very unpredictable.

and vote the Democratic ballot or register Republican and vote the Republic ballot. We can't register independent but in some states you can.

28. Coming from a staunch Republican family,
They considered me a Mutant because I was always a Democrat. Even in the 5th grade when our Social Studies class had a mock election, I voted for JFK. I was honestly dumbfounded that everyone else in the class voted for Nixon.

but I have changed my registration to vote in primaries when I wanted the weaker publican to run against an incumbent Democrat.
