Want to see how a McCain vs Hillary match up would turn out today
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 12:53 PM by ShadowLiberal
http://www.electoral-vote.com/">http://www.electoral-vote.com/

This site just posted a map today using polls conducted in different states to predict the outcome of a Hillary vs McCain match up. Not all of the results listed there go on polls of Hillary vs McCain, some just list the 2004 election results giving Kerry's votes to Clinton and Bush's votes to McCain.

Still, the potential swing states with newer results then 2004 reveal a disturbing trend, Clinton loses to McCain 251 to 287 electoral votes.

Swing states with new polls Clinton loses to McCain in.
-Virginia
-Wisconsin
-Missouri
-New Mexico
-Washington
-Oregon

Swing states with new polls Clinton beats McCain in.
-Florida

The site also says that tomorrow they'll post what the polls say about an Obama vs McCain match up state by state. I wouldn't be so surprised if McCain beats Obama as well, he's going to be tough for us to beat in a general election.

1. I don't believe it.
Besides, we'll have campaigning before voting.

So is Washington. That site sucks. Who are they trying to kid. The numbers are wrong. Old man MaCain is toast.

DEMS and GOPS in the USAare not going with someone who says the USA WILL BE IN IRAQ FOR 100 YEARS!!! GOPs are getting sick of the war and the economy too.

12. So Will They. They Will Also Have Swift Boating by the Mighty Slime Machine

The MSM loves McCain. They always call him a "maverick" and a "moderate", which is enough to ensure that he gets no fallout whatsoever from the unpopularity of Bush**'s policies, even though he is totally committed to continuing them indefinitely.
How do you fight that sort of thing?

He's so old he'll probably die in office.
We'll have to revive those "heartbeat away from the Presidency" ads if he picks Huckabee or some other wackjob as running mate.

2. But given that many of those swing state polls are within the margin of error...
I think it's tough to say specifically that McCain would beat Hillary. I mean, I have a pretty tough time believing that the Pacific Northwest would go McCain over Clinton.

Also, for what it's worth, I love electoral-vote.com. Great site.

3. he wont' be the nominee
his wins in NH and SC were based on Independents voting for him, something they can't do in the Super Tuesday primaries, many of which are Closed. He has yet to get the repuglican vote in any of these races, so I doubt he'll get it enough for the Nomination.

8. Maybe so, maybe not.
I definitely hear what you're saying, but momentum is a big deal. If McCain follows up his SC win with one in FL, then I think he's got a real chance to get the nomination.

4. I can't believe there are those who want McCain to be the nominee
rather than Huckabee or Romney. McCain will have several advantages chiefly the media will promote him like nobody else and second he does have appeal with independent voters that any candidate dem or rep will need to win in November. If anybody thinks McCain would be a pushover will have a rude awakening I think.

6. It's Hard to Believe
It's hard to believe that anyone in their right mind would vote for McCain. He's a war monger who has said could have troops there for 100 years. He backs bush and actually hugs him when on stage. (How gross is that?) I can almost understand tapping for sex in a public bathroom easier than I can understand hugging bush.
But then, it's hard to believe that anyone would vote for a Republican after what this bunch of neocons have done to our dear country.

Those who would vote for McCain over Clinton should have their US citizenship revoked.

9. The Media Loves McCain
John McCain gets a free pass on just about everything, while if some one sneezes near Hillary Clinton and she doesn't say, "God Bless You" she's a heartless atheist.

The legend of John McCain - that of the principled maverick who stands up to the establishment - has become fact, so they print the legend.

5. WA & OR will not vote for McCain
I don't know about those other states, but the warmonger McCain is not going to win in Oregon and I don't think Washington either. Although I do think we can forget any rocky mountain western strategy with McCain in it. And we can forget the south, except for Arkansas, with Hillary in it. It's a real shame. Obama gave us a chance in so many more states.

10. Here's a neat site for state polls.
Someone had posted this site earlier in the campaign. While I don't think this site is as rigorous in their statistics as Pollster.com, they do provide tables and links to all the state polls. Based on all the latest state polls (some of which are pretty old) they have Clinton beating McCain with 266 to 256 electoral votes, Edwards up with 255 to 216 electoral votes, and Obama down with 188 to 323 electoral votes. However since most of the polls are older, I think Obama will do better than they predict.

McCain is our toughest opponent. I think we can take him in the general election though if we have a candidate that appeals to independents. IMHO, Obama would do best among independents in the GE.

11. I don't see how
any Democrat or Independent could vote for McCain. Even a lot of Republicans are disgusted with BushCo. McCain represents more of the same of what we have now. 70% don't seem too happy about where we are now. Why support a continuation?

I don't get it.

15. State polls are not the way to look
Not in a presidential general election. The national margin directs toward how the states line up. Once we've got a decent sample of national polling after the nominees are obvious, you can make evaluations state by state. Otherwise, plenty of mush in those findings, like Florida more likely to go to Hillary than Washington or Oregon. The two northwestern states are many points more Democratic than the nation as a whole, while Florida tilts about 2 points red, compared to the nation itself.

If Hillary wins Florida, everything else falls in line. You can ignore the other states mentioned in the OP. The parlay of a Democrat winning Florida but falling short of 270 electoral votes would literally pay at least 10/1. And that's being extremely conservative.

economy vs any repuke, but the campaign must be smart.
