8. My understanding is you are left out if you refuse to participate
So if you want in you are in. However, you won't go to jail if you don't buy in. You just may not get treated but thats your call. Edwards and Hillary mandate coverage so there will be a penalty civil or legal if you don't participate.

27. key word- SINGLE PAYER- "universal" is not the same thing, despite Hillary's
successful attempt to confuse those don't listen carefully.

The only significant difference between her plan, and Obama's is the her plan will REQUIRE people PURCHASE health insurance, or be fined.

I agree completely we need not for profit- single payer- universal health care.

24. I have excellent insurance which enabled me to catch a precancerous condition
before it became really dangerous.

But I know many dear friends, and yes a few relatives, who don't have insurance or Medicaid, and are just hoping for the best. Health, which is in general beyond one's control, shouldn't be dependent on hope. Good health care should be guaranteed to every American citizen. PERIOD.

26. It will be your choice...
...there is no mandate, so people can opt out of coverage.

Personally I find all of their plans idiotic. We need Kucinich's plan, the only plan that makes sense, which is universal SINGLE PAYER health care. It gets rid of all the issues brought up last night: no one is left out, no one can opt out, no one has to worry about fines and penalties if they don't buy the "affordable" insurance, no one has to worry that enough people will opt out that it weakens the system or that they can game the system.

But if I had to go with a plan between Obama and Clinton, I'd go with the non-mandated plan, since I really strongly do not want yet another government mandate that I am now responsible for buying insurance and dealing with the associated paperwork (am I the only person who thinks that drowning in paperwork is one of the banes of modern existence here in the US?).

30. Not sure we're talking about the same thing...
...yes, you have to make special arrangements for poor people to have health insurance, basically subsidizing it. The "mandate" as I understand it, is that we will all be required to carry health insurance one way or another. The question then becomes, what are the penalties for those (say, someone in the middle class who is just scraping by, and who does not feel they can afford the health insurance as set forth by the government program)? And how does that help anything?

Again -- there are problems like this already cropping up in Massachusetts, and that is no surprise at all. You can say that those who do not purchase insurance are deadbeats or irresponsible, it doesn't matter. The fact is, the best solution is universal single payer health care for all. It simplifies everything, makes sure everyone is covered, and costs less overall than any other system. And it has the added advantage that it does not impose yet another government mandate, another way for us to get fined if we don't "get with the program".
