Are there any heteros who will volunteer to help us gays understand what
our issues are, and when we can legitimately take offense?

There is clearly a sense among some people here that the LGBT community simply doesn't understand the issues that impact the lives of our friends, our families and our selves.

If you feel you are the right person to treat us like the infants you believe us to be, and let us know when we can have your opinions, please step forward.

8. I don't honestly see a whole lot of people here telling
the GBLT community how they should feel. Could you be specific? I know you can't call out other DUers, but could you give us a rough idea of what kind of thing you're referring to and whether you think that the general thinking of most hetero DUers?

17. Heck ya, I'm hetero & am always being told that same thing.
Hard not to be offended and extremely frustrated by people like that.
Sorry for the delimma, but some people are just really ignorant.

Anything else on your mind?
Wish you could elaborate on this subject a bit. Can you give an example somehow?

18. If you haven't already noticed it, I'm not sure if I can make a difference...
The GLBT issues get sidelined or worse (ex-gays? *sigh*)... and people are told to hold their nose, "get over it", and be good dems.

It's not new.

I've known more oppression from the hetero community than ever from the gay community. My best friends along the way have been LGBT. Coolest people exist within that group.
I do know what the poster is referring to and offer apologies for the ignorance of many human beings.
Life is just too brief, ya know?

30. Yeah, I'm totally in a crisis. I have no idea what my interests are. I need straight people
--preferably ones who never give a moment's thought to LGBT issues--to tell me all about who is trying to harm me (no one) and why (because I need to shut up and let history handle it.)

Gays like us keep getting in the way of our own liberation with our gayness. Don't we realize that people are grossed out by us? Best thing to do is stay in the closet and take baby steps. After 50 years of protesting and 40 years since Stonewall we still have no legal protections from getting fired or evicted. Almost half of the homeless kids in America are gay. But we do have domestic partnerships in a few cities. And some corporations have benefits for us (although at some corporations, you'll get pushed out of your job for being gay if you try to get those benefits). And we can get 'married' and 'civil unionized' in Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Jersey--even though no one is completely sure about what that means.

But we'd be crazy to be skeptical about the Democrats. After 40 years of lobbying them, as a whole, they are finally sort-of kind-of taking a stand on some issues if that's okay with the moderate Republicans who might vote for them.

32. Are we to assume that GLBT "community" at DU is uniformly anti-Obama b/c of McCLurkin?
I am myself bi and don't think that the swarm of protestation, comparing it to a candidate putting someone up front from the KKK etc is really to the point at all.

It's not that I like McClurkin or even feel Obama made the right judgment call when faced with the dilemma ('disinvite' McClurkin from an already widely publicized event or offend some in the GLBT community), but I certainly find the USE to which this episode has been put on DU (as well as the comparisons trivializing what the KKK is abhorrent).

Wrapping oneself in the banner of political correctness is, like wrapping oneself in Old Glory and sporting a crucifix, more often a form of political manipulation than anything else.
