Hillary Hater Makes Robo Calls in South Carolina
By Paul Kiel - January 22, 2008, 11:48AM

We've gotten reports from two TPM readers in South Carolina that they received a negative robo call this morning about Hillary Clinton. Here's TPM reader RB's description:

I am listening to a robocall smear against Hillary Clinton repeating all kinds of rumors from the Bill Clinton years, like an FBI agent said on inauguration day that Hillary Clinton was in a fury--screaming and ranting because she couldn’t have Al Gore’s office, “when Bill dropped his pants” with Monica Lewisky and his “harem in the White House,” she had “affairs with Vince Foster,” etc. The call repeats “Can you trust her?” over and over. Says things like Hillary treats women like they are “invisible.”

Caller ID said the number was “unavailable,” ...........

1. Well isn't this interesting. DU only wants to discuss anti-Obama Robo Calls
This thread was about to fall off the front page without a single comment.

2. Hil's robocalls in NV said they were paid for by her campaign.
What did these say about who paid for them?

5. Not the ones that I remember DU debating
At least while I was participating on one thread no one had identified a source. The discussion focused on anger over anonymous robo calls being made and suspicions that Hillary's camp was behind them. Right now that situation is reversed but with no corresponding interest shown.

Of course whether a robo call is obnoxious or untrue or not, it is better to have the sponsors of those calls clearly identified, and if Clinton's campaign made robo calls and correctly and openly took responsibility for them, that is far preferable to these calls.

Would people be more upset if these were emailed smears of Hillary circulating rather than robo calls? We've had those types of discussions before.

7. I can't find a link. I looked. I think you may be confusing accusations with reality
Many people simply assumed Clinton was behind a group of anonymous robo calls that the Obama campaign alerted the media to, without any evidence of that.

No one seems interested in making accusations in this case though. Just another hit job on Hillary.

8. Here is a link to the DU thread where people got outraged when it happened to Obama
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x4159379

There were over 80 posts on that thread with specific accusations made and general outrage freely expressed. Yet no more than 5 people have bothered to even comment when it happens to Hillary. It seems the people who were outraged at this happening to Obama are rather selective about what bothers them.

15. Comparing the two robo calls...
This one seems a bit worse, yet it gets zero attention.

Not surprising, of course, but the double standard is pretty incredible.

10. I guess that they're OK because Hillary was the target.
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 07:57 PM by TwilightZone
Since there aren't a couple dozen threads and hundreds of posts referencing them.

I think this kind of crap should be denounced, regardless of the candidate targeted.

18. At least that is a reply. I'll take it
Call me a cynic, but I think few DUers even gave this a serious thought as long as it only involved charges of robo calls made slamming Hillary. I can respect your reaction. I tend to believe the story becaues of the long pattern of hate activity against Hillary, from whatever sourse, but I agree that proof is lacking and suspicions are always warrented in matters regarding anonymous behavior.

Thanks for posting.
