1. Yes on 56
It allows a budget to pass with a 55% majority and Democrats are the majority, so in the future it will be easier for the Democrats to pass a budget without the Republicans trying to block it.

7. and when Republicans are the majority?
why not just have the withholding of pay part, but leave the required 2/3 majority?

I'm actually completely in favor of gridlock, especially if it could be coupled with suspending pay.
It will make the legislature actually work together.

Requiring only 55% will make the majority (whoever that happens to be) focus on swaying a couple of votes rather than focusing on real compromise or dialog.

2. Yes on 56
The requirement for a super-majority to pass needed tax increases is what's responsible for repeated budget stalemates and the 38 billion shortfall that helped bring Davis down.

4. Yes! I hope it passes, it will be payback
to the Repugs for their refusal to deal with the budget problems so as to make Davis look back and win his recall.

5. A pox on their houses.
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 11:13 PM by Capn Sunshine
Schwartzenegger started this. He got elected claiming he had a "new way" to do things. Thisis the same BS that Wall Street Bankers wanted us to enact to finance their other schemes for fleecing the state. Like prop 57. This thing sounds great but when you look at republican long range plans to seize control you have to wonder why they feel like they need to lower the states legal majority requirements to add more taxes. Taxpayers have few protections against unjustified tax hikes. The California Taxpayers’ Association says the 2/3rds vote requirement is the most important protection we do have. No on everything. We have better ways to do this. They need to wake up to that fact.

I'm not going to enable someone to put another 56 billion dollars worth of debt and 59.9 billion dollars worth of interest on my as yet unborn grandkids tab.

Who Opposes Proposition 56?

6. no on 56
unfortunately the dems in ca are not in good standing with me right now. 13 to 18% of voting dems voted for ahnold in the recall election. i expected more spine in that situation. therefor i can not trust the ca dem party with total control of the state leg. (i don't trust the repubs either, should they get more than 55%)

8. YES on 56 a 1/2 cent sales tax would have handled the debt already
but for the ridiculous amount of votes that were required.
It's exactly what Pete Wilson did during the last BUSH fiasco.

10. um, that doesn't make sense
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 12:01 AM by Doomsayer13
20% disliked Bustamante and voted for Arnold, what does this have to do with state legislators passing the budget? Nearly all the Dem legislators endorsed No and Bustamante, I don't see how the rank and file Dem voters and the legislators are correlated and how becuase the rank and file voters voted for arnold it makes the legislators incompetant on budget issues. Mind explaining this to me?

14. Yes on 56!
The budget process in California is in crisis and has been for years. What happens now is a small minority holds out and waits for pork for their district. Then it all gets added to get their vote. Also, noone can pass true budget reforms or increase taxes. We need 56 desperately.
