Our Divisiveness: Healthy or Suicidal?

For the past many months, I've operated under the assumption that our disagreements are healthy and will be resolved after a nominee is selected. But lately, I'm not so sure. I hear a determination, recalcitrance, stubbornness and refusal to compromise in the voices of my fellow Democrats that scares me. In fact, the most scary words I know are, "even if ..... is the nominee, I won't vote for him/her..."

Or even worse, so-and-so is a Republican, so it doesn't matter if I vote for that person or not.

This is total horse shit and you know it. The absolute worst Dem is better than the best republican, and you know it. There IS a difference. Think of the Supreme court.

Please. I know good sportsmanship when I see it, and things are getting scary and ugly. We need to remember that we all want change. Bush is the worst president ever, ever, in the history of our country, and perhaps the worst leader in the history of the civilized world.

It's crazy to say you won't vote for the Democratic nominee at this point. We need to fix ourselves from the bottom up, so badly, and resuscitate our dignity.

You know that Obama can do that.

You know that Edwards can do that.

You know that Clinton can do that.

Please, use your fucking common sense at this point. Sorry for the profanity, but we can't stand to dick around at this point. We need to put a Democratic in the white house.

1. Negative posts with no analysis should stop

At this point they do nothing. They don't compare the plusses or minuses of any candidate they just crap on whatever is closest. If a person is legitimately against any of the candidates then that's fine. I'm just tired of posts that have the vomiting emoticon and nothing else. Thanks for all of that insight!

5. I agree 100%

All candidates have their pros and cons and when a civilized discussion on the issues takes place here, it's phenomenal. Rare, but phenomenal. The closer we get to the GE, the crazier it gets so you'll rarely see me actually post in GD-P unless I'm defending one of our candidates or bashing republicans (or in threads like this obviously, lol).

In defense of DU:

This place is packed with so many passionate people from all backgrounds that it's bound to get nuts around here. This has been a hard 8 years for most of us and knowing there are still so many Democrats filled with fire and drive is a good thing in the long run. In this case, the saying "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" definitely applies.

I suspect this will be a completely different forum 4-6 weeks after the Democratic candidate is selected. ;)

2. It's embarassing. I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into. And its divisive.

...kind of sad though, since people's true colors are always displayed during periods of high tension or adversity. I'm not sure what it says about us if, when the going gets tough, we are this level of disgusting and vicious towards each other. There are people here who literally hate people who support a different candidate. That just blows my mind.

I said in a post a while back that I've come to really hate the Clinton campaign, and I used the word "hate." But I tried hard, even in my subject line, to make it clear I was making a difference between hating Hillary Clinton and hating the kind of campaign that I feel (subjective opinion statement)is being run for her. There is a difference.

I'm not sure what all of the personal attacking is all about.

3. If we win it is healthy, if we lose it was suicide

We need an honest democrat in the white house. Putting in people who have a history of embarrassing and damaging our party is not a victory.

I won't vote for Hillary, not even if it is Romney she is up against.

I still blame Bill's actions for weakening our party and weakening Gore's position. This weakened position allowed Bush to win in close states like Florida.


A small step forward that leads to a giant step back needs to be avoided at all costs, even if that cost is 4 years of Romney or McCain.

4. And change is going to come January 2009...we don't even have to hope...

GWB WILL be out of the White House, but if a Presidential candidate can't take the heat in a Dem primary, what will the Rovian swiftboat machine do to them? And the "winner" is going to inherit the biggest mess in American history. Takes a very strong candidate to succeed here. No whiner can go the distance.

6. Definitely destructive. I really really wish the campaigns had never gotten to this point...

Personally, I don't see them pulling back from the brink. As much as Bill got humiliated by Teds' speech, I don't see him stopping, nor do I see Obama stopping the sort of behind the scenes outrage thing.

Bottom line, they really have gotten to the point where they both personally don't like each other. We can argue who's fault it is, but clearly the atmosphere is poisonous and will hurt our chances in an otherwise GOLDEN year.
