Poll question: The VEEP, the VEEP . . .
Long list before short list for veep By NANCY BENAC, Associated Press Writer

Long list before short list for veep

WASHINGTON - Yes, yes, yes, it's much too early to start thinking about running mates.

Too bad. People are doing it anyway.

And even though they won't admit it, odds are that Sens. John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton are giving it at least some thought.

So, too, are people who turn up their noses at the suggestion they might be a good fit, yet secretly harbor ambitions of getting the nod.

Veepstakes speculation — always an undercurrent with a presidential election afoot — intensified this past week after Mitt Romney dropped out of the race, helping to clear McCain's path to the Republican nomination.

Already, there is a "choose Mike Huckabee" movement, an "anyone-but-Huckabee" counter-boomlet, and plenty of other names in the mix, including a slew of governors, senators and others singled out for their potential attractions related to factors such as age, geography, policies, experience and personal chemistry.

1. Richardson
Brings in the west, the latinos, and some real experience in governing.

2. My Thoughts Exactly
Especially if Obama is the nominee, it would help him with the Hispanics, which seems to be the one Democratic constituency with which he is weak.

3. Obama/Richardson would be one Hell of a strong ticket.
Hell, let's see if we can put an entire cabinet together....

President: Barack Obama
Vice President: Bill Richardson
Attorney General: John Edwards
Secretary of State: Joe Biden
Secretary of Defense: Wes Clark
Secretary of Interior: Al Gore

Anyone else want to take the rest of the cabinet?

9. I think the Dem veep (hopefully Obama's) is going to be having
to do a lot of work going over to Congress to get them to come along on the agenda. I think Richardson is great for this too. He is a friendly pragmatic guy.

4. No VP gives you more (especially if it's Obama) than.......
Bill Richardson. He absolutely, positively flips NM blue and he helps a ton with Latinos. Obama for whatever reason hasn't connected yet with Latino voters. He has time to do so, but Richardson would ensure that we do really well with Latinos in November. Bush made progress with Latinos between 2000 and 2004, and we need to turn the tide back in our favor.

I don't think VP's matter nearly as much as those of us in the chatting classes like to think. Rarely do they do much in the way of providing a bounce. The only way a VP flips a state is if that state is very close to begin with (this is why Richardson flips NM while Evan Bayh does NOT flip Indiana).

5. Obama / Edwards would be so hot it would melt the Republicans right off
the stage at the debates and make them look even more like a bunch of ossified old men in the media.

19. I Doubt The Offer Would Be Made or Accepted by Edwards
Edwards can't be the perennial VP candidate--he'd be a running joke.

10. Gore/Obama was a ticket I wanted to see
I never thought that Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton would be a winning ticket, but I'm beginning to revise that idea. I wonder if they could work together?

12. Obama/Gore.
And before you say, "NO F'ing way Gore would do that", think that if Gore did accept, it would only be if he could become what he wasn't in the Clinton Administration: A constant presence of wisdom and insight both as President of the Senate and as Obama's most Senior Advisor.

And in 8 years... He would be able to finish what Obama begins.

17. I wouldn't be opposed to the idea...
...but I don't think Gore is interested. If he wasn't interested in being the POTUS, why Veep?

15. Obama/Edwards or Obama/Bayh
I'm fine with either, although since I did donate money to the now "suspended" Edwards campaign, I guess he would be my first choice.

16. You people are nuts if you think Obama will be Clinton's VP
He'd rather stay in IL and run for governor.

In all actuality, she may find it hard to find any credible running mate.

Although, credibility isn't exactly her focus, is it?
