Epic blowout in Virginia -- GOP crossing over to vote for Obama!
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 03:17 PM by Leopolds Ghost
UPDATE: I am really sick today so I haven't had a chance to hear much of what's going on- but based on the emails I am getting, Barack Obama is winning Virginia in an epic blowout.

UPDATE #2- Virginia Run, one of the most Republican precincts in Fairfax County has had 230 Democrats and 130 Republicans so far. WTF? Poll workers there just called me and said some Republicans have admitted being told to take the Democratic ballot and vote for the weaker candidate. Who is that to the GOP?

UPDATE #3- ARLINGTON COUNTY SHAME. Cars being towed outside polling places after they failed to have enough voting machines and had an hour long wait to vote.

The author of this blog is a big Clinton supporter: previous post urged people to vote for Clinton

4. rethugs have been voting for Obama ever since Iowa
His slim margin in the delegate is due to rethug and "independent" ( how many rethugs registered as independents?) support.

that it was only bc cons switched sides and voted for him... a way to undermine his margin of victory.

14. Truth
His slim lead is due to rethugs, although his big margins tonight will not be because of them. Here is the Rethug vote in the early states.

New Hampshire

Democrats: H 43, O 32
"Unregistered": O 52, H 30

Nevada

Rethugs don't show in the poll but we can compare "independents" to Democrats.

Dems: H 51, O 39
Independents: O 47, H 33

South Carolina

Dems: O 57, H 28
Rethugs: O 37, H 20

Florida

Dems: H 52, O 35
Rethugs: O 27, H 23

31. Independents are not the same thing as Republicans
and most people in New Hampshire are independents. Florida was a closed primary, so the Republican sample was probably too small to be very telling (just like the SUSA poll today that shows Obama winning Latinos in VA...way too small of a sample to be accurate).

Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 04:14 PM by Tarheel_Dem
Look, Virginia has been trending blue for some time now. That is attested to by the success of former Gov. Mark Warner who still remains highly popular there; popular enough that his endorsement elected yet another Dem Governor in the form of Tim Kaine.

Now Gov. Warner seems poised to take a Senate seat that has been held by the GOP for decades. And let's not forget the Hon. Senator Jim Webb, himself a FORMER Republican, also from Virginia. If the Hilbots need to console themselves at the major asswhipping being handed out by the Obama campaign, let them make whatever ridiculous claims they have to. I understand their resentment

But make no mistake: Warner, Kaine, Webb and now Obama turn Virginia the nicest shade of blue. COUNT ON IT!

36. Believe it or not, but I've seen message board where the RWers
are talking about doing this very thing. They think that McCain will have an easier time beating Obama than Clinton. I don't know if they are voting for him in large enough numbers to have any effect, but it is happening.

16. LOL
He has no evidence that Republicans are voting for Obama to support the weeker Dem, rather than, say, voting for a candidate they like.

On the other hand, we have accounts of actual partisan republicans voting for Sen. Clinton precisely because they see her as the weaker GE candidate:

32. And why would Republicans in Iowa, with a competitive first in the nation caucus
spend three hours with Democrats trying to influence their result when at the same time voting was being held for the Republicans?

Why would a member of the Reich allow their voter registration to be changed to 'Democrat'? This is what happens, in order to caucus with the Democrats.

There have been articles that the Towers were brought down by controlled demolition. It does not make it true.

I don't believe that shit will float. 80% want change, GOP are not about change, they are the "Staying the course" Party. If these people are crossing the line to vote Obama, or even Hillary...it means the same to them, as it means to us...they are disgusted with the direction the GOP has taken this country, and they want change.

If its the mouthbreathers..the foaming at the mouth 24%? I would be amazed they can organize like this coast to coast, and not one word has been leaked about this massive campaign...not even to Hannity or Rush.

7. Unprecedented interest in Hampton Roads -- suburban/military naval base area
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 03:22 PM by Leopolds Ghost
Column by Not Gretchen Bulova:

Growing up in Virginia Beach, I never knew Virginia Beach or Hampton Roads for that matter to be a "political" area. Generally low turnout in primaries and generals reinforced that idea. Even in 2004, when working for Gen. Wesley Clark in Virginia Beach, we had trouble garnering a large crowd for his visit 2 days before the primary (I believe we ended up with about 500 people at VA Wesleyan). Last night changed all of my long held beliefs about the political scene in Hampton Roads.

I arrived on the scene of the VB Conference center at 3:20. Over two hours before the doors were scheduled to open and over four hours before the event was scheduled to begin (though if you've done this before you know they never start on time). The line to get in already stretched the length of the building and people I spoke with began lining up as early as 7:00 a.m. The line continued to grow throughout the afternoon as BHO volunteers walked the line signing up volunteers for Tuesday and beyond.

At 4:30 I made a McDonald's run for my group and low and behold Mickey D's was packed too. So crowded in fact that they were out of many items (no McRibs). The doors opened at 5:15 (15 minutes early!) and the crowd poured in only to find another snake like line to go through security. Finally, at 7:10 my group passed through security and entered the airport hanger like room. At about 7:20 the campaign realized the crowd was so large and allowed about 12,000 people to file into the back of the room, blocked from the main area by two steel fences.

The place was humming. First the Obama coordinator asking for volunteers, then Bobby Scott spoke. A 20-minute break and then a Republican spoke about voting for Obama. She introduced Gov. Kaine who apparently had the same feeling about Obama as he did the night before at JJ. Obama finally appeared and the crowd went nuts. He gave a similar speech to his JJ speech, but one line stood out and received huge applause. "If we want change, we can't keep sending the same people to Washington, expecting a different result."

The estimates for attendance were 18,000 which I can believe having seen the people in this hanger. The crowd was diverse, with large pockets of African-Americans, whites, young and old, even some really young children who were there to witness history.

As I left the event, all I could think was "YES WE CAN!"

10. Amazing story. Thanks for posting. I lived in VB for 6 years, and
just moved away. When I first got there it was solid red Bush country. It has now moved a bit, although Webb still lost VB in 2006. Still in 2007 we gained seats in the State Houses, so it keeps moving leftward, albeit slowly. I wonder if the turnout will be high in Virginia Beach today.

18. I think it's too early to tell if Hillary or Obama will be the
most vulnerable to Republican tactics.

I think people who hate Bush really like the change theme.

One thing bothers me. Bush ran on the same theme.

The country was divided under Clinton: the haves and fundamentalists against the have-nots and the liberals.

The country was divided under Bush the same way.

I think Obama is saying that he can unite the two sides. I hope he can.

39. Where did they verify your party affiliation? Not the big blue book.
That's just the registered voter list. It says absolutely nothing
about party affiliation. I looked at it closely in DC this morning.

Nowhere did it say D or Democrat next to my name or anyone elses's in or on the
cover of the book.

All the woman asked was if I wanted a Dem, Repub, or States Party card.

P.S. NO ONE took an R card (where you exchange your card for
a ballot, there were two ginormous stacks of blue Dem cards and no
R or other party colors. Period.

And there are lots of R staffers voting in my precinct. I saw the kids
next door, and they claimed to be D's and got blue cards.

I had my Dem party voter registration card with me, but no one even looked
at it.
