Latest Zogby - Obama trounces both GOPers, Clinton loses to McCain, barely edges out the Huckster
Released: February 13, 2008
Zogby Poll: Obama Cruises in Election Match-Ups against McCain, Huckabee

Clinton lags, losing to McCain and barely leading Huckabee

Barack Obama has gained strength in prospective general election match-ups against Republicans John McCain and Mike Huckabee, while Hillary Clinton does not fare as well, a new nationwide Zogby Interactive poll shows.

The online survey shows that Obama would defeat both McCain and Huckabee, while Clinton would lose to McCain and only defeat Huckabee by a small margin.

Clinton struggles among political independents, trailing McCain by a wide margin and Huckabee by a slim margin in that demographic, the survey shows. Against both men, she wins less than 80% of her own party. However, she does better among Democrats than either McCain or Huckabee does among Republicans. Huckabee wins just 70% support in a match-up against Clinton, while McCain wins 72% of the GOP support against her.

Obama has much stronger Democratic Party support, winning 87% backing of the Democrats when pitted against Huckabee, and 84% of the Democratic support against McCain. Among independents, Obama leads McCain by a 46% to 33% edge and Huckabee by a 48% to 31% advantage.

By the Numbers:

McCain
42%

Clinton
37%

McCain

Obama

37%

Clinton
40%

Someone else/Not sure
22%

Huckabee
34%

Obama

Among men, Obama narrowly loses to McCain but narrowly leads Huckabee. Among women, he leads both Republicans by margins that are wider than the advantage Clinton enjoys over McCain and Huckabee. However, Clinton loses to both McCain and Huckabee among men.

Obama held wides leads over the GOPers among younger voters. Among older voters, Obama held a narrow lead over Huckabee, but trailed McCain. Clinton led Huckabee and McCain among younger voters, but trailed them both among voters age 65 and older.

The online survey included 7,468 likely voters nationwide. It was conducted Feb. 8-11, 2008, and carries a margin of error of +/- 1.2 percentage points.

1. not that I don't like the #s, but can we all agree not to post Zogby?
I don't think this man/company leans left or right, Obama or Clinton, I think he is not a good pollster.

I think many here might agree with me.

Or not.

5. He's going to go out of business if he doesn't start getting polls right ...
so I don't give as much weight to Zogby as other pollsters, but I don't dismiss him either. After the California debacle, he can't afford many more mistakes.

3. Among the young
I teach at a small college in a very conservative county in a very conservative Southern state. We held a mock primary here, and among students, Obama cleaned house in the Dem mock primary, and Huckabee cleaned up in the Rep primary. Overall, Obama won going away. Among faculty and staff, the winners were the same, but by narrower margins.

If Obama can do that well down here, that bodes well for his chances in November.

4. Zogby Is A Clown
Res Ipsa loquitur:

Pollster John Zogby: “In California, we have Obama polling into a 13-point lead. Monday was another big single day of polling for him there. What has happened here is that in addition to building leads among almost every part of his base of support, he has dramatically cut into Clinton’s lead among Hispanic voters.

9. Dukakis was 18 points ahead of Bush 41
in the summer of 1988. These mean nothing now.

11. More good news for the Obama camp
Whether polls like this are right or not or meaningful so far out from November is of little relevance.

What is of great relevance is that fence-sitters and undecideds who are focused on the electability question, as they should be, swarm to Obama side as they see more and more of these types of numbers and they start to be a consistent trend.

Obama is the far more electable candidate in November. I am so thankful that people figured that out before it was too late and we ended up with the inevitable disaster that was going to be Hillary Clinton in November.

Maybe you don't have the research chops, but I do.... let's examine and see if this poll passes the smell test....

Be back in a while. :)
