19. GIVE 'EM HELL, KERRY!!!!
Great speech!! He got me excited and energized...can't WAIT for the debates. Was listening to the Shrub this morning before work, giving the same old tired speech, and contrasting that one with the one Kerry just gave..well there is NO comparison. Man, it has been such a long 3 years.

Kerry desperately needs to get himself a new speech writer. Shrum's a hack.

Your guy, "Mr. Excitement", lost. Get over it! The speech was fine. There is nothing Kerry could do that would merit your approval.

14. A lousy speech is a lousy speech. Period.
Kerry's speech is larded down with hackneyed and painfully overused catch phrases that have been absolutely drained of any meaning.

Trust me, if John Edwards (who I voted for) had delivered this craptactular oration, I'd have slammed him too.

22. It's a Kerry rally -- of course they're enthusiastic
But would someone who hasn't already decided to vote for Kerry be moved by this speech? Doubt it. Fortunately, those people aren't likely to be watching C-Span. But they just might watch Kerry's convention speech, and I haven't seen anything that would indicate that Bob Shrum is capable of writing a memorable convention speech for Kerry.

17. Many people don't know any better
I've actually heard a few good speeches in my time. The kind of speech that can actually sway people. This one ain't it.

And what does Kerry's knowledge of the issues have to do with the quality of the speech he gave? If a smart person gives a crappy speech, it's still a crappy speech. Bill Clinton is one of the smartest politicians around, but he couldn't give a decent speech to save his live. The only thing memorable about Clinton's speeches were their excruciating length.

29. Bush gave a brilliant speech at the 2000 convention
Of course, the credit should go to his speech writer.

The speech was flagrantly dishonest, but frighteningly effective. Personally, I'd have had a hard time making a convincing case that eight years of peace and prosperity was a squandered opportunity. But this case came very close. It was a far better speech than Gore's.

41. You don't have to be a Bush supporter to acknowledge an effective speech
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 09:56 PM by dolstein
Sooner or later DU'ers need to develop the ability to remove their ideological blinders long enough to realize that not everyone who disagrees with them on a particular point is a political enemy.

If you bothered to read my post, you'd already know that I thought the speech Bush gave was flagrantly dishonest. That would be a sure tipoff to most rational people that I am not a Bush supporter. I certaintly didn't support Bush then, and I don't support him now. I have always voted Democratic in presidential elections, which is a lot more than many people around here can say. But because I refuse to quote chapter and verse from the little red book, I frequently get branded as a right winger.

I will vote for Kerry. I'll even contribute money to his campaign. But that doesn't mean I'll shower mediocre pedestrian speeches with undeserved praise. I am resigned to the fact that if Kerry wins, it will almost certainly be in spite of his skills as a candidate, not because of them.

considering dolstein to be a big fan of lieberman but criticizing clinton's speeches. doesn't seem most people agree with her so her not liking kerry is actually good for kerry considering clinton won and he gives long detailed speeches also.

33. Fine, quote a single, complete sentence from one of his speeches
And "Don't stop thinking about tomorrow" doesn't count.

People can quote whole passages from Lincoln's speeches, FDR's, JFK's. Clinton didn't deliver a single memorable speech during his two terms in office. Presidential oratory reached an all-time low under Clinton.

Clinton was a great informal speaker. He could speak off the cuff on just about any policy topic. But he could never deliver a good speech.

so why would I cite Josh Marshall ? Son of a millworker, first person to go to college, two America's. OOOOOKAAAAY. Like I said I like John Edwards, but I don't think he was ready for prime time, but that is my opinion and you are entitled to yours.
