Public Service Announcement: I think we need a sex ed 101 class at DU.
The median age for menopause is 51.5 years. Some women go through menopause a little earlier, some a little later.

More than likely, Hillary Clinton has already experienced menopause, and she did so quietly and in a dignified private manner, without you noticing. I'm sure she appreciates your concern, though.

If your wife/mother/cousin/neighbor is experiencing hot flashes and mood swings because of menopause and this concerns you enough that you feel the need to post about it at DU, then I suggest your wife/mother/cousin/neighbor consult with a better gynecologist than the one she's currently seeing. There are many medications that null these symptoms. Many women go through menopause with no sypmtoms at all, thanks to the wonderful advances in the medical field in the past fifty years.

While there are myriad remedies for your wife/mother/cousin/neighbor's menopause-related discomforts, I'm sad to say that there are no easy remedies for your being stuck in the dark ages in your knowledge of women's health. It takes much more effort to discard long-ingrained sexist notions than it does to do away with hot flashes.

Tomorrow we'll discuss constipation, should that topic pop up in the threads today.

This ends this Public Service Announcement for today.

Seems like more of a biology issue to me.

Unless there are some awesome positions that only older women know about....

what kind of sex-ed did YOUR school provide?

I'm old, so ours was a film strip about armpit hair and pimples. No discussion of positions - that was left to peer tutoring at recess.

6. Your point is well and good, but...
"quietly and dignified" is a load of bull crap. It's remnant of our 1950's hide our problems, hide our differences, separate but equal mentality. And, we're better that it's died.

If you are going through menopause or anything "quietly and dignified" is an insult to the difficulties that you will have. Haven't we gotten past our squeamishness yet?

become irrational screaming banshees when they go through menopause.

I agree with you, and would be glad to talk more about this in the women's forum at DU.

37. Not everybody has difficulties
I didn't, but a good friend is still having hot flashes 10 years after her last menstrual cycle. With menopause, the watchwords are YMMV. If Clinton were having uncontrolled hot flashes, every female TV watcher over the age of 55 would know about it.

44. Menopause is not a medical event any more than menstruation is.
I don't go around announcing when I have my period. If I suffer discomfort, I attend to it privately as I would any other condition.

It's nobody's business, and is certainly no cause for attention.

47. You shouldn't have to keep it to yourself...
I didn't say you had to celebrate it or something, but that society as a whole should be able to talk about it as anything other than taboo. It's natural. It's a part of life. There are a great many people who would benefit from being able to find help if they need it, or maybe just a little support from friends and family.

28. Let's make sure that all know what
menopause is: the reduction of estrogen production to about 20% of that during pre-menopause. Progesterone production goes to zero. Many doctors believe it is the lack of progesterone that causes uncomfortable symptoms.

There are other theories that American women's high diet of dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream) that contain even more estrogen because the cows have been given 'growth' hormones (which is estrogen) has lead to more troubling symptoms...and also the higher breast cancer rates that American have as compared to Japanese women. Japanese women don't have menopause symptoms....of course the think drinking milk from a cow is insane....why not drink milk from a dog??? Once one is weaned from the mother, don't go looking for another specie's milk...it's not good for you!

However the Dairy Industry tells American women we must have CALCIUM for strong bones....so drink milk, eat cheese. There are other foods that contain calcium.

Believe it or not, Premarin which is just about the only drug the medical community uses to treat menopausal symptoms was developed back in the '50's.....AND NOTHING ELSE has been studied. Premarin is urine from a pregnant mare. The mare is artifically inseminated and stands in a small stall with a catheter in her for the entire gestation. The foal is born and gets to spend maybe three days with its mother and then it is taken away and slaughtered for dog food. The mare is artificially inseminated again and the cycle continues. The mare usually dies after about three pregnancies...just standing in that stall. These Premarin 'factories' are in N. and S. Dakota, Montana and Canada.

The medical community doesn't even know what causes a 'hot flash.' And they really don't care. No research is performed on menopause...women have been force fed Premarin for over 50 years.

Of late, women have decided to go the natural route and have find a Compounding Pharmacist who would compound an estrogen or progesterone that exactly mimics the hormones her body produces. BUT, this is a problem for Big Pharma...what occurs NATURALLY can not be patented. So no $ for Big Pharma...so now Big Pharma wants the FDA to outlaw Compounded hormones because 'they are drugs and have not been tested on people!!!!!!!'

I hate corporations.

Read Dr. Lee's book, "What your doctor won't tell you about Menopause."

I liked Progesterone cream.

This post has become very long...theories on the affects of testerone on our culture are VERY interesting. Testosterone masks empathy...increases violence...and results in a loss of patience, focus, and concentration. Men have testosterone 'periods' 3 weeks out of the month with only one week of calm sanity. No wonder our world faces constant war. This can be treated however.

This ends my PSA for today.

32. Compounding pharmacies are excellent.
They make testosterone cream in small concentrations for women. There are no testosterone products on the market in low enough doses for women, so you have to go to a compounding pharmacy. They make lots of different bio-identical hormones.

And the FDA is suing several of them and trying to outlaw them.

41. LOL.
Is this one of those threads from which we might all benefit from seeing who recommended it?

Does this belong on the greatest page?

I'm generally against DU censorship, but it's ironic that the OP has a call out for greater monitoring of the posts and recommendations of DU Members, on the grounds of cleaning up the greatest page when, in fact, this post made it to the greatest page, itself.

See the thread to which I refer here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x4769244

This post is why I would not censor the greatest page. It's neither newsworthy nor terribly insightful. It is slightly informative, but the informative data is not supported by the kinds of links that would make me think this is a scientific exposition. Rather, it's a blatant attack, but it is also really funny, and I am glad it got recommended. Otherwise, I would probably not have read it.
